Schizophrenia, The Modwheel, Cosmos, E621, AMBA – all influential electronic music acts, all with the same man benhind them: Tom Middleton. Under these (and many other) names, he has been releasing music, remixing and DJ:ing since the early 90s. He is also known for his ambient/electronica/deep house sound as defined by Global Communication, the hugely influential group he started with Mark Pritchard.
We met with Tom in his home in London as he was putting the final touches to the track Hypnotizer, which was just released on Urbantourque records. We talked to him about his background and how he got introduced to electronic music making by Richard D James.
In the interview, we also get a walkthrough of the track Hypnotizer that just came out on Urbantorque Recordings. We’ll get to learn some of the Jedi Master’s secret moves and how he uses Reason to build his signature deep sound.
We paid a visit to Dave Spoon, prolific UK dance music producer, in his combined home/studio in Portsmouth, southern England. Dave has a string of successful releases behind him and he’s been spotted in a variety of roles lately – from remixing the likes of Pet Shop Boys and Madonna, to a residency at BBC’s weekly ‘In New DJs We Trust’ show.
Dave’s early releases were immediately picked up by super star DJs like Pete Tong and Roger Sanchez, which obviously helped Dave Spoon along the way. Pete Tong is also on the list of Dave’s frequent collaborators.
Dave got started in music making in the early 90s when he discovered a TB-303 and some other vintage gear in a cupboard in school. He produced a lot of tracks, but gradually moved over to DJ-ing instead of making music. In 2000, he purchased a second hand computer that had ReBirth on it, and Dave was immediately hooked again. He got Reason around the time it came out and he quickly felt it was the tool for him.
In the video, we get a walkthrough of his track Lummox, which is out on Dave’s own Televizion label. He shows us how to build the track’s driving bass sound and shows us some of his favorite sonic tricks.
We met with producer Claude VonStroke in San Francisco to talk about how he is putting Reason to good use in his productions. Claude is the man behind tech house hits like ‘Who’s Afraid of Detroit?’ and ‘Deep Throat’. Besides producing music and running two two record labels – Dirtybird and Mothership – he is also an in-demand DJ, constantly playing in the US and overseas.
Reason is Claude’s main production tool, but as a fan of old analog gear he often ends up sampling synths to use them inside Reason.
In the interview we also get a walkthrough of Claude’s track Who’s Afraid of Detroit? that was done entirely in Reason. We’ll get to see some of his production secrets, while others will remain secret simply because the routing of a vocoder effect turned out to be so convoluted Claude couldn’t understand how he once did it!
