Record and the future of Reason

posted by Record Blog 2009-07-02 at 13:54

By request, it seems we need to clarify our product road map and how Record and Reason relate.

Hopefully by now it is clear that Record is a stand-alone program. We simply call it Music Recording Software, because that's what it is. Record is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to make music recordings, whether you're a band, a songwriter, a guitarist, vocalist or all of that on different days of the week.

Record is also, thanks to its incredible built in mixer and effects, a great choice for mixing and finalizing any music production.

Reason also is – and remains – a stand-alone program. Reason we call a Music Production Instrument. It contains the ultimate software instrument set, combined with tons of great effects. Reason is the perfect choice for anyone who plays keyboards, in the bedroom, studio or on stage. It's also great for all of us who love making music with drum machines, synths, samplers and effects.

Thanks to its powerful yet simple sequencer, Reason is also a great production tool. But in a slightly different way from Record, and that’s precisely the point.

For Record – think guitars, vocals, recording, music production and mixing.
For Reason – think keyboards, synths, samplers drum machines, effects - and music production.

What the two programs have in common is their purpose: To help you make more and better music, to sound fabulous and having a great time while doing it.

Some people will want to use Record only. Some people will want to use Reason only. It just depends on what kind of musician you are.

Those who are really smart will use both programs together; it’s the ultimate combination. The integration is 100%, making you far more productive than any recording application and plug-in combination available out there. Yeah, yeah, we’ve said that before, but we’re so excited about it, sorry.

The Future of Reason

But back to Reason and it’s future.

There are so many ways to use Reason. Stand-alone, as a production tool. As the best keyboard workstation you can find. As the ultimate instrument rack for your DAW. As an ideation tool. As a beat production station. The list is endless.

Even though Propellerhead have now introduced Record, we're totally committed to Reason as a product in itself. Propellerhead will continue to develop Reason. Just like we always have. In fact we have a dedicated team working on an update of Reason right now. We always do.

And the same is true for ReWire, we will support it tomorrow just as we do today. Adding Reason to your DAW will continue to be the most powerful vitamin injection you can give it.

Which Should I Buy?

Yeah that is the question, isn’t it? What to buy? Reason? Record? Both? The good news is you don't have to think too much about it. If you buy Reason now, you can add Record later, no problem. Even regardless of which version of Reason you have.

Or vice versa, if you buy Record, you can add Reason when you feel the time is right. We've made it simple and we’ve set the prices to make it a no-brainer to start anywhere and go from there.

Also, a lot of the concepts in the programs are the same, so if you start with Reason now, you will have learned a lot of techniques that you can use in Record later.

There will also be special offers for those who get Reason now and want to buy Record when it ships on 09/09/09. Exactly what those offers are depend on which market you are in, so please check with your local distributor.

So, don't wait. You can’t lose.

Hi Ernst

Can't wait to get going on Record (i've given up on beta testing :( ). It sounds like it's just what I've been waiting for...

...except I'm gutted to read in the comment to previous blogs that Record's mixer won't be able to group channels - I think I read that all the channels run straight to master?

This is hugely disappointing as the way I, and I'm sure others, like to mix is to group drums, guitars, strings etc and apply compression and other effects accross the buss.

This is a really basic feature of most DAWs, and one people will very used to. I'm also confused about what 'flexible routine' means on the mixer page if the basic functionality isn't available?

Cheers

Howard

Well, good news that reason receives development in the future - but only if this does not mean that propellerheads plays with the idea to integrate this silly "ignition key"-Stuff into reason.

Doing this in Record is - from my point of view - a big step backwards and a really bad idea. For me it is a no-go because i know what it means if such a key get's lost on tour/stage or if it is damaged and no internet connection is available.

Doing this means (for me) not only a lost sale for Record but a lost customer in the future.

I hope propellerheads will consider removing this from Record as well a from their minds and replaces it with - if protection is so important for the company - with an activation model like Ableton uses it in Live. This would be more customer friendly, more tour/on stage friendly and should get much more acceptance.

Regards,

Please don't forget the PPC platform on next Reason updates...

On Record you do. :(

today's blog is one of the best i've read. it really does give me piece of mind, yet still keeps things confidential for future update.

thanks mr. Ernst Nathorst-Böös

Thanks for the update. Good to know that Reason is still considered a flagship product.

I was wondering if you could tell us whether any new features in Record will be back-ported to the next version of Reason? For example, multi-core/processor support and the 'sideways' rack?

The reason I ask is that I don't really have a need for Record at the moment except for those features. But I don't want to buy it for those extra features only to find a few months later that the next version of Reason has these too. It would be really useful to know where the "line of divergence" has been drawn, to make it easier to decide which of the two products I need.

Hi Mr. Nathorst-Böös,

thx for the info - but what is happening with Recylcle is it still developed ?

best regards, Andy

Reason, record, rewire..... All well and good. But, what's up with Recycle? Now that record's nearing completion, let's see Recycle 3.0 turned into a live slicer/dicer that incorporates seamlessly into record as well. I'd love to see a Dr Rex & Recycle hybrid that was capable of beat juggling and loop smashing. A Dr Recycler if you will.......

(check out Cubase's LoopSmasha, Smart Electronix's LiveCut & SupaTrigga, KKLooper & KKSlicer, LiveSlice and Audio Damage's Replicant & Automaton.)

My guess is the rational behind Record having the key is because most people won't be using Record in a live/tour setting unlike Reason. Seems like it's more of a bedroom thing.

Thank you for the clarification, although I never saw it differently. I have used Reason since 3.0 but always missed good support for mixing with audio tracks. I used to run audio clips out of the ReDrum or NN-XT but that's really a little cumbersome.

So the seamless integration of Reason and Record will free me of all the ReWire hassle and the need to run (and learn) a DAW only for remixing purposes.

I am a convinced buyer already, let September come.

Having worked with Reason since its first iteration (1.0), I've watched it develop into a superb music workstation. It's the workhorse in my system when it comes to getting musical ideas out in a efficient and creative manner. With the addition of Record the two make a lot of sense together.

I've beta tested up to 6.0 and find its a strong addition to anyones arsenal! The inclusion of the SSL style mixing desk is nothing short of greatness! True it could use a grouping function which I'm sure your people are working on as we speak...

OK so you use a dongle, which seems to create a great deal of angst among some customers, but overall a solid creation and a fair trade off for more creative power... I look forward to more from this company!

I've used reason since 1, bought it twice in my lifetime, I love its sound and flow and it's the way. I love Record its so well done. I mean now it's all running multicore with 32 bit float 64 bit mixing and that's great. I'm am excited about september. I am eager to just have the final release version u know I'm gettin a new computer for it. SO yeh, thats my big ups i think your product is amazing and it's gonna stay with musicians that favour it over the other production products and people will convert, especially when Reason 5 drops...

I READ IN A MAGAZINE that it can sample dunno which one a UK publication it was a rumour. This rumour is nowhere to be found on the internet (hahaha that makes me laugh.) All the audio forum losers don't even know of this rumour.

I think it's true haha a new smapler is part of reason 5. Beow

Thanks for this clarification.

I finally bought R4 because of what Record will do (already does) to it. So I'm glad to be in that group of new R4 users that will "upgrade" it to Record for a more than fair price (thanks for that!).

Like meowsqueak said, I'm now starting to think about the real reasons why I would consider buying Record as an upgrade to Reason 4, if Reason 5 brings half of what makes me buy Record, like multi-core and multi-column racks.

I'm not complaining, since I think the next Reason needs these (and more) upgrades and its only fair to bring those to all Reason users.

My point is that, all this cool pricing still be available to Reason+Record users trying to keep those 2 products up-to-date so they won't be "bankrupt" twice as fast as single product users ;)

About Reason 5, I'll just say the smallest of many of my wishes: RPG-8 PolyCV Gate bug gets fixed -.-'
...the biggest? Be a part of the Reason 5 beta testing team :D

am I reading this right:

To use Record + Reason together you do need Reason version 4. However, the Record for Reason Owners package will not only give you Record at a discount - it also upgrades your Reason 1.0, 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 license to Reason version 4 for use with Record.

I'm a Reason 3.04 user but I've been so excited by the Record beta that I might want to upgrade, is this telling me that buying Record will include a Reason 4 upgrade? Or is it that I'll 'unlock' the Reason-based devices for use in Record? (but that if I run Reason, it'll still be 3.04) Record is really the program I've hoped you'd make for years so I'm excited to use it, but don't want to give up my ReFills - just wondering what my options are.

Followup question: does the "early bird" $50 rebate apply to the Reason 4.0 upgrade or only to full version of 4.0 purchases?

Thanks!

It's great to hear that there will still be a strong focus on future developments with Reason. That's our bread and butter for a lot of us producers.

I'm glad you addressed the problem that Record creates for Reason users. I still have my concerns, however. I'm a guitarist mad keyboardist, so I'm going to want to use Record, but I want the instruments and effects that Reason contains, so I will probably have to continue to upgrade that. But if all Reason is for me is a collection of devices, I'm paying good money for functionality that I don't need. At some point, it seems to me, you will have to unbundle the Reason devices and sell them separately for Record users. I learned a long time ago that the only software I can afford to own is software that I can afford to keep upgraded. I have no incentive to upgrade Reason for its new functionality if I'm only using it for its instruments.

I think that, with the introduction of the dongle and your overlapping functionality between Record and Reason, Propellerheads is demonstrating a deep commitment to its profits and not to its users. I'm not at all happy about the direction your company is taking.

No profit - no program developing. Easy as that.

I have for years used the Reason in live situations. It is among the most stable program that exists. I look forward to work with Record use both live and recording!

No one is talking about the fact that although the upgrade and move to "Record" will be remarkably affordable for us REASON 4 owners, that the cost to replace my 2.5 G5 MAC with it's 8 gigs of ram will be somewhere around 3,000.00 US because Record is apparently Intel only. Is my G5 really that much of a dinosaur?

Comment posted by: krishotvedt - 2009-08-16 11:20

Theres a lot of talk about grouping mixer channels.... why dont you just run tracks you want grouped to a 14:2 mixer then run that to the main mixer...... i know that only works if you have reason and record.... but why wouldnt you?

Comment posted by: guento - 2009-08-28 17:54

I want to buy Reason&Record combo; but, I don't want to pay more for updates 2 mounts later; (ex.Reason 5 or Record 1.5)after I bought Reason&Record combo.
Because I am a home user and, music is just my hobby.

Could you give us for more information about Reason's future? When will the new reason be appear?

Also;
I think everybody waiting for "autotune&recycle" combination with Record. I think these two things are the most wanted features. Should take into consideration..

Comment posted by: salteman - 2009-09-01 08:01

Yes,I agree with your comment about Autotune. One important feature that is used in so many pro recording situations. They are using Line 6 products! What
about opening up to other 3rd party? If you have to use rewire, might as well be using Logic, protools etc.
Love Reason & I mentioned 4 yrs ago while taking an online Berklee course, that
the only thing missing in REASON was the ability to lay down Vocals, guitar etc to
the great creation you can get up & running in Reason,Now they've finally done
it!!!!!!!!! A Little confusing on how the 2 are seperate but work together as one,but I'm sure it will work just fine.Looking forward to sept.

Hi Guys From Cornwall england,
I await with eager anticipation the release of record.I have never thought my recordings could sound soooo good. Ihave never had so much fun. beta testing record has been agreat pleasure. I've been using reason since it came out. It has been the only drug free treatment for my bipolar disorder. It has also given me a rediscovery of my electric guitar. I get such great results from my out of date, tempramental and cheap hardware. Will there be a place where we can upload and show off our masterpieces on the website? Keep on rocking in the free world Love Alex
