Pencil Reason!posted by Kalle Paulsson 2012-06-27 at 16:25
So after the WWDC announcements, Tage jokingly said that Reason would look like a pencil on the new Retina displays. No one was sure what this actually meant, but it kind of stuck and Pencil Reason is now an official word here at the offices.
I ordered a Retina MacBook Pro for myself right after the keynote, and yesterday it arrived! Unboxing it was a nice experience, as always with Apple products. Yes, I'm a fanboy. I tweeted about it, here's the pictures!
It's quite thin!
The footprint is a little bit smaller than the regular MBP.
I was momentarily confused by the misssing power button. Can you spot it?
And today I enabled the full 2880x1800 and tested the real Pencil Reason for the first time! Look at that menu bar, it's like a pencil! Hmm.
Edit: User Koshdukai asked for a full mixer bonanza screenshot. Here it is. Count the knobs!

Yikes! It's already tough to adjust the tempo, gonna need to slow your mouse down if you leave it at that resolution.

Magnifying glass not needed!
I just put the tip of my nose on the screen. Now just to deal with the headache. :-)

I dig the Retina display but wasn't so thrilled about soldered-in RAM and SSD
thus i went for the oldschool version of the new MBP.
Somewhere down the line i'll slap in a SSD instead of the optical drive and have
the best of both worlds.
Also the OD was a must as i needed it to install another audio application.
That' s too odd in the age of lightning fast internet connections. ;)

Yikes! This does look a bit problematic.. but at the same time - WOW - you can fit SOOOOO much on that screen!

So... how do you eject discs from the USB SuperDrive?

Vectro - You can either drag the disc icon to the trash, which will turn into an eject arrow when you start dragging the disc icon, or you can just select the disc icon and hit cmd-E or select eject from the File menu.

It seems that this resolution is way too much for this display. The buttons are so small it must be totally unworkable. Or am I mistaken? Please share your views on this.

Raapie, indeed. This is hack to enable the full 2880x1800 resolution of the Retina display. Normally it only goes to what corresponds to 1920x1200.

I am curious how much noise the fans make. my old MBpro is like a turbo jet. might make me switcht to Lenovo which seems to be totally quiet.

Yep raapie Lenovo is defenetly the PC machine! Got a old Lenovo Thinkpad X61S and absolutelly rocks!!! Quiet and rather powerfull considering its a 6+ years old machine .)

Now i just need suitcases full of cash and someone willing to make a 30 inch screen with this resolution.
Thanks for sharing the pics, the mixing desk is crazy!

Could probably squeeze one, maybe two more channels into view by turning off the sidebar navigators! Is it really too small to work with at that resolution? It looks so sexy!

if you can read, say, a news web site on your Retina iPhone at arm's length (I can - and I'm near-sighted), you should be able to handle this. The only thing that might be required for ease of use is larger tool tips showing the values when tweaking knobs, but everything else should work just fine.
