Propellerhead Software & Berklee College of Music in partnership. License brings Reason Software onto every computer on Berklee campus

Stockholm, Sweden - November 11th 2005
Propellerhead Software and Berklee College of Music today announced a school-wide license agreement for Reason software. The site license provides a complete, full-functioning copy of Reason to every computer on campus and provides for updates into the future. The site license, for over 4500 Berklee students, faculty and staff, is the largest to date for the Swedish company.

Berklee requires every student to have his/her own laptop computer. Starting with this fall's semester, each of these laptops comes preloaded with Reason 3.0. Reason is a software package that mimics a rack full of various recording studio equipment. With Reason, a musician can compose and produce music in much the same fashion as working in a recording studio, but at much less cost, and without the need for a specialized physical space and lots of hardware. By leveraging the power of modern computers, Reason provides a virtual music production studio in software. As a result, faculty can now accept native Reason files for class assignments and individual projects. File sizes are much smaller than standard audio, often taking as little as 30-40KB as opposed to even compressed MP3 formats, which are several MB with reduced sound quality. Additionally Reason files can be shared and worked on collaboratively as adding or editing parts, changing mixes or effects and trying out different sounds is a snap.

"Reason has been an indispensable tool for all entering students, and is a vital component of the software toolkit used in our Introduction To Music Technology course," says Berklee's Music Synthesis Department Chair Kurt Biederwolf. "Our Music Synthesis majors have been very creative with Reason over the years, and the advanced patching options have kept up with our students' needs as their understanding of synthesis and production concepts deepens."

According to David Mash, Berklee's Vice President for Information Technology, , "Reason provides a unique bridge between the hardware and software worlds, allowing us to teach in a ‘virtual studio’ environment." "By incorporating Reason on all student laptops, all faculty computers, and all college workstations, we can standardize the tools that support our curriculum." Reason also works well in combination with other tools in use, as Kurt Biederwolf notes, "Reason also functions as an effective complement to Apple's GarageBand and Logic, via ReWire."

"Besides the obvious benefit of teaching future musicians and educators Reason software, we have several motivations in constructing this agreement," says Timothy Self, Director of U.S. Markets for Propellerhead Software, Inc. "First, Berklee gives us fertile ground to see all the amazing ways Reason can be used in music production and to take advantage of those to create better products. Additionally, we hope new methods and curriculum for teaching and learning all styles of music will grow out of the Berklee community's having ready access to tools like Reason. There is simply no better place than Berklee to generate and test these ideas."
