The Bays have earned a unique standing in the music world after seven years of live playing and never releasing a single record. Being a live-only band, they have played most of Europe's premium festivals, toured the continent and was soon to leave for a gig in Goa, India when we met with them while they were getting ready for a show at The Zodiac in Oxford, UK.

Despite making electronic dance music, they don't use sequencers or backing tracks and they don't even rehearse. Everything you hear at a The Bays gig is created there on the spot.

“It just does exactly what we want it to do”

Bass player Chris Taylor and drummer Andy Gangadeen forms the group's solid rhythm section with keyboardists Jamie Odell and Simon Richmond adding the rest.

In the interview, Simon explains that he uses loads of vocal samples played through Reason. Each sample setup is in it's own song file and he can pick and choose from hundreds of them while playing.

He is using Reason's remote and remote override to map his Oxygen 8 controller to the devices in Reason. Here's an example of a vocal sample played this way, The Bays style:

How Da Man

In this example, Simon uses the NN-XT for sample playback, while the RV7000 reverb, PH-90 Phaser, Scream 4 and DDL-1 units provide the effects. The knobs on the Oxygen 8 are used to control Filter Cutoff, Filter Resonance , LFO speed and modulation amount on the NN-XT. Each effect is routed to it's own effect send that is mapped to the remaining knobs on the controller.

Go to The Bays homepage and listen to some live recordings and you can hear many examples of using Reason this way.
