ResonBass (Factory Sound Bank / Subtractor Patches / Bass)

This bass tone is extremely versatile, mainly due to the functionality of the Subtractor Synthesizer.

I like to use this bass tone when creating my first bass ideas in the initial stages of writing a song. Many times I end up sticking to the sound once I have a great part and I’ve tweaked as much as needed. ‘ResonBass’ can be used as a basic solid bass tone, or for those tweakers out there, you can go crazy with all the extra features in Subtractor.

For example, sweep the “Freq” knob in the “Filter 1” section while playing a rhythm….if you’re clever try using automation to remember the performance of the filter. Also, pushing the “Mod” wheel in a separate rhythmic pattern while playing this tone can be very effective. If you really want to explore, try adding the Screamer Distortion to accomplish a full bodied, distorted, grinding bass tone. The thing I love the most about this patch is that it’s a simple tone that is effective for several styles of music and there are a million ways to morph the patch with endless amazing results.

Among many compositions, I used this patch last year in a track called “The Chamber” which was featured as the backend of all Trailers for the movie “Before The Devil Knows Your Dead” featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and Marisa Tomei.

Sound on Sound (Factory Sound Bank / Malstrom Patches / Rhythmic)

The Malstrom has a pretty mean selection to begin with. One of my favorite patches is “Sound On Sound” which adds a rhythmic candy for any song.

The patch has a pulsating vibe that’s unmistakable but if mixed in correctly will subliminally add color and movement to your composition without trying too hard. These are the elements that make songs unique and add flavor that leaves the listener questioning why the music sounds so good every time they listen. Try adding the DDL-1 to compliment the rhythm.

This patch is appears in a song called “Bird On A Wire”. Lead Singer, Kelly Moneymaker, and I will be releasing the new Silvermoney album “Goddess Killer” in Jan/Feb of 2009.
