What do I need to connect studio monitors to my Macbook Pro?
I am assuming that I need an mbox that connects through USB and then the XLRs to the monitors, but does the audio go through the USB to the speakers with that device?
Is this type of thing all I need between my Macbook and the studio monitors?
If not, any recommendations would be great.
Re: What do I need to connect studio monitors to my Macbook
If your monitors are powered, then you can drive them right from the headphone/line out jack.
If not, then you need an amp of some sort, but even a regular old stereo amp will work.
You won't be able to power them from a soundcard, but it's wise to get an external soundcard anyway since they generally have better drivers for what you're trying to do. Since you're using a macbook, I'd suggest you skip USB soundcards and have a look at firewire soundcards, since they've been better performers in my experience.
If your monitors are powered, then you can run them from an external soundcard, just like a headphone/line out jack.
Hope this helps.
