Speakers / Monitoring

After using Reason for nearly 4 years I'm at the stage where I am starting to get involved a lot more in the mastering. I'm currently using some JBL creatures for overall desktop sound but was considering some monitors.

Does anybody know if it'll make much of a difference going for ones with an optical connection as the iMac outputs optical through the headphone jack.

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Thought I'd post an update. I bought Mackie MR5 MKIIs. They sound great already, but I'm running them through the headphone and TLS ports. Just in case anyone finds it useful info :)

I got the MR8´s and i friggin love them. They translate really, really good to alot of other systems. Ofcourse depends on the room in which you listen to them too :)

Very true. If you have some really bad null and peak points in your room's response your going to have some trouble getting mixes to "translate". Try using a reference mix to help you learn your room response.
Check this out, try playing a deep bass tone and walk around your studio. You should notice that in some spots your bass will increase and in others it will decrease. This is caused by standing waves.
Best of luck to you (OP) "learning" your new speakers.
