Rainbow Globe (prog rock)

A first mix. Created using Propellerhead's Reason and Guitar... Lead guitar tone from Guitar Rig 4 Rammsfire Lead Pro B. Other guitar tones from Record effect patch - Guitar Mix processor... all other instruments are from Reason.

I have mixed entirely on headphones (neighbours).... so any comments on the mix are very welcome.

Ah, you always get such a nice sound. There are a million little details that bring it to life. You must have spent a bit of time doing the Reason instruments because they sound 100% authentic. Did you use Kong for the drums? I am still using reason 4 and waiting on 6 (auto-tune mainly :D). The mixing sounds really full as well without being overdone, and I am listening in headphones. Sure it would sound even better on a stereo.

Well done man, mix sounds great. I love that rammsfire stuff. When you look at the amp in the rack (is that blood or rust) you'd think it could only be used for metal but it works just about everywhere.

Thanks very much for your comments. The drums are Reason Drum Kit 2 (Rock Ballad preset with modified hi hats and cymbals).

This was actually very fast to do, only took around five hours to compose and play Piano, Bass and Drums. Probably spent about another 5 - 6 hours adding guitar, synths and mixing.

I mastered in Logic (64 bit) using T-racks (32 bit) and I think something went wrong with the bounce to MP3 as it sound unusually different from the wav file and I have had a similar experience with another track... i will be checking that out and updating for the final mix.

Regards

Pete

Hi Chris,

thanks.... I think Rammsfire is my favourite feature from Komplete 7 and is a very versatile amp for all styles... I really like it for chunky rhythms, biting leads and mellow stuff as well.

Regards

Pete

Always like your prog ventures, Pete and this is no exception.
What headphones did you use btw, for mixing?
What exactly do you mean by modified hihats and cymbals?
I'm assuming the bass is Reason Bass Refill too?
Nicely done.

HI

thanks for listening and your comments.

I use Beyerdynamics DT770
Here's a review and comparison of head phones from sound on sound if you are interested

By modified I meant I selected different hi hat and cymbals than the ones in the preset. I also changed the reverb, room setting and eq settings.

I use the Fender Precision Finger bass from REB.

I used the Steinway Grand Studio preset from Reason Pianos.

I use these three patches to start most of my prog tracks (and they often end up on the final version as well).

I'm looking to buy a drum VSTi soon, but I may just end up getting the Rhythm Combo if it sounds that good. Seems pretty versatile. Do you use the 16 or 24 bit samples?
re: headphone mix - did you use a reference track or compare with speakers afterwards?
