Reason & iPad

I am currently contemplating buying either an iPad 3 or a cheap 17" laptop. I want the laptop so I can work on reason when I'm not at my desktop. But I would rather buy an iPad than a laptop if there's any way an iPad could suffice. I saw the new rebirth in the app store, but it still doesn't seem sufficient for my needs especially since I want to be able to load projects I'm already working on.

Has anyone else found themselves in this situation?

The obvious solution would be for propellerhead to port Reason to iOS but I understand how unfortunately unrealistic that is.

I use nanostudio on my ipod to make music. It's the best studio app for ios devices imho.

Sometimes I export the channels to reason for further work.

If you aren't a SERIOUS traveling producer or someone that relies on a mobile rig then don't get a laptop. I was just like you in thinking that if I grabbed a laptop I could have my studio everywhere I go,...as it turns out I don't use it AT ALL for producing or even starting scratch projects despite having Reason, Sonar, BPM and others installed on my Laptop. I do on the other hand have an iPad 3 that I use a lot at work to get ideas going. IMO it's easier to whip out the iPad and get in a zone than it is to bust out a laptop, boot it up, set up a keyboard or pad controller and launch software..etc.

iPad 3 owner here. Best purchase I've made in the past year - it's used practically daily, and I only go to my main computer to work in Reason now. There are plenty of mobile app solutions to suffice as a great scratch pad on the iPad, and not to mention its use as an OSC for Reason over your WiFi network via ReTouch Control or Lemur.

A laptop has its strong points, but for price-to-price - you're really not going to be getting a production worthy latop for $499 USD IMHO, so the iPad is the clear winner there. It's just so damn comfortable to use - laying around on the sofa, outside in the yard or on the patio, in bed, at the coffee shop - it's incredibly useful (after you learn to adapt to its limitations).

I say go for the iPad - it's a solid investment.

Thanks for the P'Head-iPad-ReTouch advice.
What are your thoughts on ReTouch on the smaller iPad (upcoming 7in)?
and, what is latency like?... or, it that really not an for just tweaking?
I wouldn't mind 'Figure'-iPhone responsiveness.

Thanks for any advice,
O1B

I'd wait a few days/weeks if I were you.

In addition to the imminent "iPad mini" launch, there's also rumors of a small upgrade for the standard iPad 3 (new battery, better screen, lighter, new connector like on the iPhone 4, etc.).

Welcome new iPadist! I do tons of musical sketching on the Pad. What Enoch and Upright said +1.

I would suggest you some apps, but the third line of my sig says it all, my personal top choices, check those out and have fun!

There are separate templates for iPad and iPhone/iPod - I would guess that a 7-inch iPad would be yet another format, and would require its own dedicated templates.

that said, ReTouch do a great job, so I have no doubt they'd nail the layout for a 7" iDevice.

Meanwhile, you might want to listen to BoddAH and wait a bit to see what new devices come out hoping to be the "must have" Christmas device.
