One Thousand Souls [Pink Floyd-esque MOR]

JP's ode to Gilmour-era Pink Floyd ;) . Originally written in 1995, this is the first full recording. Vocals, yeah, sorry... worse than usual. Needs more tweaking at least. Still, Roger Waters couldn't sing either...

Somewhere out there
I found my dreams intact
Somewhere out there
I saw a future beckon to me
Somewhere out there
I saw a face that changed one thousand lives
And somewhere out there
I chanced upon a destiny

Somewhere out there
There lies the answer to my fears
Somewhere out there
I'll find the changes to the years
Somewhere out there
I'll watch a chasten thousand souls
And somewhere out there
I'll watch them lose their self-control

Life was something precious to them
They wasted all their years
Crying into someone elses' unforbidden tears
Forget yourself, or so they say
Death lives on in other ways
Fifty years, for what it pays
The price of buried lives

You can't predict the future
Like you can't forgive the past
I'm losing all my freedom to ghosts the dead outlast
It changes all the ways I think
Before the time an eye could blink
And be brought back from on the brink
One thousand souls reach out

They brought me down to earth
And crushed the final lust
Showered me with senses I can't convey

They sacrificed my love
And cleansed my sacred stains
Turned me to a state of disarray

They watered down my dreams
And canonised my soul
Only now can I understand what it was I threw away

Only now can I understand what it was I threw away
Memories, memories

If my memory can wait awhile upon your mind
Maybe I can escape my time
But if my memory just faded out into the haze
At least I'll have the knowledge
That I once burned unto your gaze

Somewhere out there
I wrote the words that changed a world
Somewhere out there
I watched one thousand souls unfurled
Somewhere out there
I thought your face looked just the same
But somewhere in here
I know I've known you like I'll never know again

Aye that's a long one...Cool tune. I think the first half would sound good at half time - hitting the snare half as many times (if that makes any sense). It sound a bit pop-py at that beat, unlike the lyrics.
Your guitar work near the end reminds me of Porcupine Tree (Sound of Muzak I think).
Like it.:)

Cheers, that's good idea. I'll give it a whirl.

Edit: Yes, thanks Strat, that's really neat. Actually, that's something Floyd did quite a bit, iirc, a snare on the 3rd instead of 2 and 4. Wanna do a bit more work on the vocals mixing before doing the re-up, though.

I don’t think Roger would mind if you get Mark Knopfler back in the studio to help accentuate Roger’s vocals a bit.

Have you ever seen Waters and the Knopf in the same room?

Actually it's been years since I've heard from Knopfler. Really must be in dire straits ;) Muahaha. Muaha.. ha.. h... oh nvm.

My, this song is now really bringing my PC to it's knees with a Polar, another Polar, an Echo with a Polar via a Shelob for switchable vocal echos, a TSAR-1R, Ozone and the guitars!

Polar: it's so cool. Definite purchase on the next pay day.

How could I? I’ve never had the privilege and pleasure of being in your studio before. I’ve got to ask: do they have different preferences in mics?

Consider yourself lucky. I've got the privilege, but it's rarely a pleasure!

Ever since I bought another massive organ* a few weeks backs I ain't got room to swing the cat in the here!

*took two of us to lift and the damn thing nearly killed me getting it upstairs... heaviest thing I've ever lifted, and as you know, I've had a few massive organs! I actually passed out at one point.

Yeah. I'll bet that's what she said. Hmm ... when can I visit your studio?

Edit: BTW, I meant to say in all seriousness: Man, those are some heavy-duty lyrics.

It's not that exciting. Nothing to see here. At least not until those top-secret REs are released ;)

OK, it's a little bit exciting...

_______

Right, 2nd mix of OTS is up. Added Strato's half-time snare suggestion, better vocal echos (jeez Shelob makes that shit so much easier), and hopefully improved vocal and bass levels. Not sure about the semitone-shifted echo on the keychange - an experiment too far, methinks!

Heh, thanks - I think ;)

It's kind of appropriate for today, given Tony Scott's death yesterday: it's about the suicide of a writer/artist.
