Frankendrums

Braincandle asked me to show him my drum kit I made out of different samples so here it is. I spent hours on it over the last few days after not being happy with Reason Drum Kits (very dull and quiet), and pre-made drum kits in Redrum and Kong. I wish I could afford Alt Drums... man they sound good! Anyway, in the meantime, I'll be happy with this kit I made.
I spend as long as it takes changing the velocity and articulation here and there to make it sound as real as possible and of course it sounds better with music but this is just the drums doing different beats. All the percussion instruments come with the stock samples, besides a few from the Roland Drum Kits Refill.
Let me know what you guys think and if you want, I'll share the samples with you to make this too.

So.. any thoughts as to the sound, ambiance, functionality, or timbres?

scoobyman 2012-10-02 01:08

I think the cymbals sound good. The toms sound a touch rubbery. But not bad.

LastAlternative 2012-10-02 05:03

Yeah plus the toms are really thin. How about the kick and snare?

scoobyman 2012-10-02 05:25

The snare sounds good to me. The kick on its own in the beginning sounds a touch plastic. But when its doing the double kicks with the rest of the instruments, it sounds good. More out of curiosity than comment, what reverb are you using?

Braincandle 2012-10-02 07:37

Man, those sound great. I really like how authentic the cymbals sound. Was that playing done on pads? Only place where it sounded not-real-drums was the tom fills. Something about the actual tom hits being so fast, it's like it cant keep up and sounds fake. Snare and kick, nice...i mean, sooo many bands use bass drum triggers antways...i guess for fills, is that where dr rex comes in?

I have a midi controller but prefer to draw all my beats in. Then I change velocities and slightly un-quantize hits here and there to make it more human. Basically, I'm manually doing what Regroove was made for but I just don't really know how to use Regroove.
I do agree with you guys on the toms. Last night I went through some other toms but didn't find any that sounded good in Kong, Redrum, or Roland so today I'm gonna program the Reason Drum Kits toms in because I really like them but it's a bitch to customize the nano XT in Kong. BUT that's all I can do for now. Just wait til I get Alt Drums! I'll be cranking out my music like crazy! Til then, I feel like my music doesn't sound good enough with the sub-par drums I have. I'll be working soon and then I'll musically be on fire when I have the money to spare. Yous guys know how it is...

This is why I tend to stick with digital sounds. I've grown accustomed to it over the years, even the metal stuff I do has a DnB style programmed beat.

But fair play to you for building this! From the start point, it must have taken some considerable time, nice one and thanks for sharing :)

Well, I want my rock music to sound as real and convincing as possible. The only thing in my rock songs that isn't physically played is the drums.
