Getting a physical Drum machine?

so, I'm thinking of buying myself a Christmas present sometime soon, and I was thinking of buying an Akai MPD18. I have the axiom 49 key, and it has the pads, but 8 pads is too little for me at the moment; I want to get full blown sampling, and as much as the reason 6 drum machine is great, I still like to work on physical equipment.

Anybody have any tips on which other drum machines I should consider?

You mean pad controllers, not drum machines, right? I have an old M-Audio Trigger Finger and a Korg PadKontrol. Both are very good and work flawlessly with Reason and Ableton Live. I don't have an MPD18, but I've already test driven the MPD24 and liked it very much. The owner "fixed" the pads to give them a better feel.

Don't get the MPD, get the Korg PadKontrol. Unless you are very used to the MPD pads you will be very disappointed as I was. I immediately returned it for the PadKontrol which is much more tactile.

For example the MPD pads are actually round, the edges don't trigger well. Also you have to hit them quite hard to get a sound. I guess the original MPD was like that so again, if you're used to that you get what you expect. But imo the PadKontrol is much, much better. Even Akais own LPD-8 is better and more tactile.

Yes, go for the Korg PadKontrol, I am having great fun with it. I don' like the Akai PADS, they are definately not responsive enough.

I have a Padkontrol.
Great stuff.
