Making a vinyl crackle/dust effect

Isn't it funny that with all this technology at out fingertips that make our productions sound crisp and clean that I am searching for an effect that makes my productions sound like good ol' vinyl!?

Well that is what I am after: an effect that can add that warm crackle/dust effect in Reason 6.5

Any ideas?

Thanks all

The easiest thing to do would be to record some old vinyl with silent grooves and layer that into your mix.

If you just want crackle, the Thor synth has a noise mode that can generate pops and clicks. But whether it would be "warm" enough for you I couldn't say, you might have to play around with filters and distortion.

Yup, just play a vinyl sample over and over. This one for example:

Reason Factory Sound Bank/Redrum Drum Kits/xclusive drums-sorted/10_Fx/Fx2_CutCodes.wav

Or... use this THOR patch.... for a starting point anyway.... autoplays and fades in from wherever you start your play marker from

You can add a bit of automation (ie slight filter opening, and turn up the density to emulate vinyl fluff and dust, and you could also add in a second Noise osc for Osc 3 (will become clear in a second), have the 1:2 balance to be on 1 fully. Then you can use Osc 3 level periodically to emulate pops and crackles with a lower density, to fully emulate your vinyl record, even without going anywhere near a smale

sweet eh?

This may sound stupid but i woud record a vinyl a few times and make my own bank of difrent vinyl crackle dust sounds. Put that togheater with difrent kind of fx in a few layes and you sure will get a pretty sexy results.

But then again, everyone in here but me can probably give you a mutch more detailed "well spelled" explination how you can make it possible throught malmström/sub or Thor etc,

Good luck :)

We ought to ask iZotope to port their Vinyl plug-in to RE format. I've had my eye on this for a while, but I have little interest in exporting to another program just to run through a single effect. Nothing about it appears terribly complicated, so I imagine it would be a fairly straightforward conversion. The VST is free, but I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable price for it.

Crackle: Load up about 25 Uhbik Q, press play, record the output with an external recording software, bounce the wave back into Reason, finished :)

No seriously, Vintage Warmer is a good tool for that sort of thing. It doesn't add crackle, but it adds some nice tape warmth.

It's not perfect, but I tried to do something with Thor...
