Custom Categories for RE's and devices
Am i the only one that takes issue with sorting everything into studio fx, creative fx and instruments. i mean you have delay and distortion in boths fx categories and can't any effect be used creatively? i dunno it just doesnt sit right with me.

So either let us make our own categories or organise them into categories that make more sense e.g.

Instruments -

Mixing / mastering -
EQ, stereo imaging, gain, compressors and other general dynamics

Effects -
every other type of effect else reverb delay, pitch correction, ect
guitar/bass amps
pitch correction

Utilities -
the way it is now

There much better :)

And plus once people start building up a collection of RE's i can imagine the current categories becoming quite messy, so new categories and sub categories could really help

I think many (if not most) people are in agreement with you. Your breakdown is great. In the past, I liked to reference Propellerhead's own breakdown on their Reason devices page...

But certainly, effects needs to be broken into several categories (since it is proving to be the dominant section with the most devices).

Thanks for the reply, im happy im not the only one. its been bothering me since the beta, just cant get my head around what constitutes a "creative" effect?

I remember Propellerhead being open to suggestions during beta (Not sure what I'm allowed to discuss, but "Utilities" was a new name).

It could be that they only had 4 categories setup at the time, so it would have to remain 4 for the time being.

Also, after complication with Ochen K.'s utility devices needing to be categorized as "Instruments" in order to have patch browsing, it suggests that the categories are a bit more complicated than many of us might have thought.

So its problem right down to the sdk then. I'm guessing we might not see this corrected until the next full release. its a shame that not a single person at an audio software company didnt realise the obvious mistake. All the daws im aware of sort plug ins into similar categories

That's just my guess and speculation. I'm sure we'll see more categories in the future.

After all, more categories reminds customers (easier) of what niche items they are missing in their rack ;)
