Having trouble opening .rns files

I can't open a .rns file my friend sent me, as he was having the same problem as me. I use 6.5 and he uses 5.
Reason says that the file has a bad format.

Any help?

pretty sure reason 6.5 uses .reason fies instead of .rns anymore.
probably why it says bad format.
I dont know if changing the .rns to .reason will allow it to open but thats where i would start.

Reason (R5, R6, R6.5) still does and always will open .rns files. You could change the file extension to .reason and see what happens.

Ask your friend to make sure the song samples are self-contained using File menu > Song Self-Contain Settings > Check All, then afterwards save the song again.

I think some of these error message issues relate to samples referencing problems, rather than problems with the RNS file.

@MayorMcCheese: Nope, it just said that the file cannot be opened.

well, he will not be able to open 6.5 files in his R5 but you should be able to open the file the other way around

You can open files from older version in newer versions of Reason but not the other way round. If you are getting a "cannot be opened", try changing the extension.

If that doesnt work, the file is corrupted. Start the burial ceremonies...however....changing the extension works most of the time. This is caused from older versions of reason btw.... I've lost loads of songs that i thought were dead but just needed an extension change. Sad times.

i'd advise you not to bother with your friends tracks as he uses 5 and you 6.5. you have the SSL mixer.. he doesnt... theres so much incompatibility to talk about between both. tell him to save up like you did lol

if you're going between mac and PC as well, make sure the file name has no spaces in it
