Polyphonic CV for the age of RE

Just like the title suggests, I'd like to see polyphonic CV support in Record and Reason. A lot of applications support this already such as Arturias Moog Modular V, ARP2600 V and u-he ACE to name a few. The user should be able to choose obviously if the outputted CV signal is poly or mono. Well actually this is just one of many different solutions to polyphonic modular style routing that I'd love to see in Record and Reason.

This was back in the Record era, but today, in the era of Rack Extensions, I think it's more important than ever. We have a blossoming selection of modular audio and CV tools in the shop that make it possible to wire up incredibly complex monosynths. Yet such complex poly synths are still mostly out of reach.

There are some tools, like Distributor, that technically allow you to create a fully modular polyphonic synth using monophonic CV, but let's not beat around the bush – it's inefficient in the extreme to have to tweak every single knob eight times as you adjust all the voices.

Of course, polyphonic CV would require a pretty major update to any devices that were to support it. But can you imagine Jiggery-Pokery's Charlotte with a poly gate in and poly curve out, hooked up to a synth with a poly curve in? Or Ochen K's A-series where everything is polyphonic? Maybe that would have to wait for the B-series, but you get the idea. :)

I would support this.

Poly note "CV" is the Next Big Thing needed after MIDI-Out and inbuilt Rex. (Although personally I'd have ranked poly cv ahead of those... ;) ). With those two cornerstones of the FSF done, there is really no excuse not to find a method of enabled this in R8, especially as, and I think this is fairly common knowledge amongst PUF regulars, all existing RE devices have space set aside for future use (in practice the "reserved space" is only really relevant for 1-3U devices, larger devices tend to automatically have some free space somewhere. I'm sure even RP find a slot in between logos).

Really all poly cv means is the ability to use devices to send/receive—at the very least—per voice note, gate on and gate off events through a manually set device-to-device connection, instead of the inbuilt sequencer-to-device connection. We call it poly cv more for convenience than technical accuracy ;) : "Poly CV" makes it sound grander than it likely is. Whether other parameters, pitch-bend etc, could also be handled via RE to RE systems is harder to judge due to sandboxing requirements and virtual, but quite real, bandwidth limitations.

So I vote MIDI-In/Out/Thru for the Reserved Space!

Dogboy, sir! You've got history of making things happen! Go start the official MIDI-In/Out/Thru thread!! :p

And poly at, we mustn't forget that!

JP, I think I see what you're saying. Indeed, "CV" itself is a very old term, predating MIDI. Propellerhead presumably adapted the term for Reason because it had similar uses, but it has kind of taken on a life of its own in the world of Reason.

Maybe the best term for this would be "MIDI CV"?
