Asante - Conscious Mind

https://soundcloud.com/asanteofficia...s-mind-preview

A son i wrote after getting a load of great feed back about a freestyle. Its about a conscious allowing arrogance to get the better of him. (based on someone you might know) Got a few other metaphors about life in there to

Heres the original freestyle

Ok, your rapping is good. decent recording and your voice sounds good too. Your beat sounds like something I would hear from a crappy old organ drum preset. You need to work on your beats.. Use loops from a hip hop library if you have to.. your organ sample is not bad but it's too repetitive. Overall, the track is too simple.. I need to hear more to entertain my mind.. When you double up your vocals right at the end, I think that I hear distortion. Make sure you deal with your levels when you layer things.

If this was truly done in Reason and you have a Reason session file, I'd love to get my hands on it and have a crack at doing a remix for you.. let me know :)

Overall, I think there is potential, your own performance is pretty good. Gotta work on your production chops though..

Thanks for the feedback

There aren't any samples, I don't use loops, there isn't an organ (do you mean rhodes?) there isn't a mix and the title does say work in progress and in the description it says the beat isn't completed.

Just wanted to get peoples thoughts on the idea

I can send you the file if you like, what type of music do you make? have you got a sound cloud.

My original idea was to try and layer a quite soft / slash emotional loop, with a more aggressive hip hop beat. And add some cinematic elements to help the story along. (hence the lyrically played strings)

The style i was going for was almost old school west coast rap, so a little repetitiveness in the beat was intentional. I wanted the cinematic elements and parts dropping in or out to make up for the repetitiveness.

Hello Asante your production works for me even though it is simple. I started out in hip hop and I know you want the simplicity of the track so it doesn't take too much attention away from the vocal. I must say the four snare hit thing gets really annoying so I would try to ease up on that. You have a good flow though man and it's a nice track.

Lately, I have been doing more EDM stuff but if you dig deep, I have a lot of mellow electronica too. Not rap or hip hop but I'd love to do something different with the vocals... Let me know

I agree with juno. Great freestyle. Amazing, in fact. Beat is weak. I hear great sound quality everywhere besides the beat. Maybe intended by you. I would hit up Kong and make a heavy duty beat. Then again, I kinda like it with the subtle beat. It's not uncommon with nostalgic hip hop.
I enjoyed this.

Thanks for the feed back guys. I admit the drums sound a bit dusty. Was going for that really basic bedroom producer from way back sound (no pun intended).

Would appreciate any guidance in how to bring em up a bit, but still keep an old West coast rapsound

Thanks probably the best I've written. I really pushed myself on this one. It featured in rap genius' editors pick list so I'm pretty proud :D

My mixing skills on the other hand are pretty basic I mostly rely on a friend of mine who's an engineer to arrange, mix swap out sounds etc. But if your up for it in always looking for people to work with.
