Tom Sawyer by Rush

Has anyone been successful in reproducing the power synth used in the song Tom Sawyer by Rush?
If so would you mind sharing the patch or settings on a Reason synth?

Great tune!

I can't help you but the original sound was probably a Mini Moog... why not layer a couple (or more) moog-type patches? Fat sawtooth waveforms with a filter sweeep.

I made a quick rns file the other day, didn't post it because I wanted to work on it more - it's a very interesting sound. I can't quite do the filter modulation that I need to do to give it that edge. I had it pretty much nailed on my old Sequential Circuits Pro One many years ago, and I do remember there was some particular modulation control over the filter (besides the obvious downward sweep) or the pulse width of the osc's, but I can't quite get it on the subtractor.

I was gonna work on it more but I suddenly don't have the time. I thought I'd post it so at least it's a starting point for you to fiddle around with some more. I'm not quite happy with it, doesn't have that gritty edge I'm looking for, but maybe it's a start. I set the sequence for the opening note, and then it loops around, so you can tweak the subs and get instant results. I used two subs because if you listen with headphones to the original recording, it's a very wide sound. You may want to just use the first sub, pan the sound to the center, mute the other, and tweak that sub until it gets closer to the original sound you're searching for, and then copy and paste the patch to the second sub, and then pan them hard left and right again, to get the full wide sound.

Find the rns file in my link below - go to the Reason Files folder and I'm sure you'll find the correctly named file in there. Let me know what you think... :)

Noticed the Headphone EQ.

Great patch.

I took off the ring modulators first. Maxed out the decay on the amplitude envs. Pushed decay up on filter envs. Disabled velocity sensitivity. Opened up the filter, pushed the amount up and adjusted resonance.

Duplicated the RV 7000 and routed a wet Swing Echoes before the reverb CL Long Hall. Cut the reverb mix to 30% Turned the ring modulators back on. Maxed out Aux Send and took down levels from Subtractor.

Added a CompressMaster patch by inserting a Scream Unit and it's sounding pretty darn close to the real thing.

Anyone want to try the synth melody patch?

Yeah, my headphone EQ... I normally route my stuff through my little Tascam mixer, which has a built in BBE enhancer thing - no real controls, just a preset BBE but man my ears got used to that thing... and so whenever I work directly with Reason on my laptop and headphones, I just need that little bit of extra punch on the lows and a bit more krispity krunchity on the highs... keeps me from doing it per channel and screwing everything up.

Wow, sounds like you did a lot of stuff on the patch - cool! Hey, if you wanna send it to me I'll post it on my Yahoo briefcase for anyone else interested... send it to EditEd4TV@Yahoo.com and I'll throw it on there as soon as I can. Unless you can host it somewhere for Jovani and anyone else that wants it.

NEW FILE POSTED

Thanks to some great tweaking by "jbclp" the patch is now better than ever! Go to my link below... once there, go to the Reason Files folder, and download the file called "RushTomSawyer2.rns" - that's the new and improved version.

Just as an aside, the synth used on that track was an Oberheim OB-X. When Oberheim later released the upgraded OB-Xa, they included that patch in the factory patches as "Rush Rezz".

Rush Programming: OB-Xa vs Subtractor

Thanks for the confirmation. Think I might search out some of the Trilogy waveforms and use some of the Subtractor settings on them for a new NN-XT patch.

Any recommended sample CDs with some good Vintage waveforms?
