8. Activate DMA on Hard Discs/CD ROMS

By default, slave drives on ATAPI channels are often set to PIO mode, even when the attached device is capable of much more efficient UltraATA (DMA) mode data transfers. This can hurt the performance of the affected devices. Also, DMA mode data transfer, places less overhead on the CPU than PIO mode. Open Device Manager and expand the entry labeled - "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers". Right click each IDE channel entry and select the Advanced Settings Page. Check that the Transfer Mode is set to "DMA if available" for all channels.

9. Disable System Sounds

25. Speed up CD Copying to Hard Drives
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem
You will need to create a Key here. Right Click on the FileSystem folder and select
New Key Name it CDFS CacheSize, this must be added as a binary value, then type in
this value:ff ff 00 00(it doesn't matter about capitals or lower case) Prefetch, this must be
added as a DWORD value, then type in this value: 4000 hex
PrefetchTail, this must be added as a DWORD value, then type in this value: 4000 hex

26. Disable Disc Indexing Service

Right Click Start Explorer Right Click Each Disc Properties Untick "Allow Indexing Service to index this disc for fast file searching"

27. Swap File Tweak For Users with 256 MB RAM or more this tweak will boost their
Windows- Music and Game-Performance. What it does: It tells Windows not to use any Swap
File until there is really no more free RAM left. Open the System Configuration Utility
\l by typing msconfig.exe in the RUN command. There in your System.ini you have
to add "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" under the 386enh section. Restart your Windows
and enjoy better Music and game performance

28. To Disable Dr. Watson
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\AeDebug
Delete the AeDebug key

29. Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after
the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer
Create a new DWORD sub-key named
"AlwaysUnloadDLL" set to 1
Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

30.. If your using XP \l and a nvidea card and experiance the well known lockup

2.go to start\run\regedit\the to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session

ffffffff in the hexadecimal which will = 4294967295 in value -- reboot \l
3.try setting the agp \l apeture to 128MB loacated in bios \l settings

31. avi files causing high cpu usage again with installation of XP SP1 & SP2
To correct the misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries
on these files. This will not effect your ability to play files, get file attributes, or even
view thumbnails . I really think Microsoft is trying to make sure people only use mpeg

32. Fix problems with USB DSL/Cable modems ( this is good for midi
contolers,Keydoards, audio & midi Interface , ANY Hardware Interface i.e :usb dat , midi
controlers and so on. a few prob was fix here... for example :Audio drop outs , midi &
audio conflicts, Lost midi mappings, Harddrive fails (extrernal usb harddrives
Some usb dsl/cable modems may get disconnected after a little while. A possible reason
that could cause this problem is that in windows xp there is an option that allows the
computer to turn off a usb device to save power. To disable this option:

1) click start, highlight my computer, right click and select properties and a window will
pop up l with the system properties
2) click on the hardware tab and press the device manager button
3) expand the universal serial bus controllers
4) Double click on the USB Root Hub .
5)Select the Power Management tab and UNTICK the "allow the computer to turn off the
device to save power"

If you have more than one USB Root Hub, then you should apply the steps to each one of
That's it, you won't need to restart the computer!

33. Make icons in windows appear quicker
In Windows XP everytime you open My Computer to browse folders XP automatically
searches for network files and printers . This causes a delay in displaying your icons.
You probably see the "default" windows icon and as you scroll it changes to the correct
icon. This is how to stop that...

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on the Tools menu and select Folder Options...
3. Under Folder Options select the view tab.
4. Uncheck the very first box that reads "Automatically search for network folders and
5. Click "Apply" or "OK"

You should see a dramatic increase in speed when Windows displays your icons.

34.Enabling L2 Cache for Windows 2000/XP

Open regedit and navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory Management Double-click on "SecondLevelDataCache" in the right pane and select "decimal", and enter the value 256.

Deep Tweaks for Geeks

* It is possible to boost overall system performance by increasing the IRQ priority of the CMOS real-time clock with the following Registry change.

copy this: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlPr iorityControl] 'IRQ8Priority'=dword:00000001

Paste it into a text editor such as Notepad or Wordpad. Save the file as whatever name you want, perhaps boost_irq_priority with a .reg file extension e.g. boost_irq_priority.reg - you can now close the text-editor and simply double-click on the file you just created to enter the information into the registry. To undo this tweak, repeat the procedure but copy this instead into the text file: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlPr iorityControl] 'IRQ8Priority'=dword:00000000

You should find that your overall system performance increases from this tweak.

* Go to Start- Run and type system.ini - a notepad will be launched containing the system.ini file. Adding the following line to your system.ini file makes the system use RAM more often rather than the virtual memory:

After the [386 Enh] tag add ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 It should look like this:

[386 Enh] tag add ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

This improves system performance since RAM is much faster than the hard-disk. (note: do not use this option if you have less than 128MB of RAM installed) By the way if you DO have less than 128MB of RAM you shouldn?t even be here. The first thing you should do in order to optimize the performance of your computer is have at least 256MB.

Here is a list of what I have disabled. Keep in mind my machine doesn't touch the internet
or a network in any way. If you have an NIC or modem of any sort, I specified which ones
and what settings with I=Internet and A=Automatic

Well it?s a considerable list and it gives you a good idea how much of Windows XP is not needed for DAW operation. Trimming all this will certainly make your DAW a lot leaner and should help performance significantly.
