It has been my understanding that the only difference between using Main or Control Room out was moving the master fader vs. moving the Control Room out knob. ie.only the method of changing the final level one is listening to, not effects or any other connected device. I can now see your point of wanting to monitor the Master out to catch glitches that are not apparent on CR out (although, wouldn't the meters peak, giving a visual notice?). I had switched over to CR out a while ago, but now I may use a JiggeryPokery Mordored in a combinator to setup a single button A/B selector between the two to save me having to move two cables around all the time. Come to think of it, would that make a nice addition to the CR/Master Fader section of the SSL, an A/B for listening to CR or Master Fader?
