There's been some pretty hefty changes to the way networking is handled in Windows 7 compared to XP. For the most part the changes are massive improvements but occasionally your audio drivers don't play nice with it. Usually it's when you're using onboard integrated networking (like your WiFi), but rarely an actual networking card.

Perhaps see if finding the latest drivers for your networking card via the manufacturer's website may help? Either way - congrats on fixing your issue!
