A Cream/Gospel thing

6 minute piece with upright bass and strat into R6. Words are forming around the theme of freedom being a dirty word, distorted by the capitalists to mean freedom to do anything their money can buy (which means slavery for everyone else).

Speaking as a bassist, I always dig an upright on anything! ;-) This has got a good groove to it, but I'd personally add some more fills and variation to the bassline. But that's just my own take on playing.

Be nice to hear this with vocals.

And politically, I'm with you on the message.

PS: if you ever want to discuss bass stuff, try this site (a very friendly bunch of folk):

... and check out this SoundCloud group:

(^ I help moderate it, so obviously I'm bias!)

Absolutely. I got absorbed in working out the guitar and totally forgot about the bassline. I'll work on the bass when I add the vocals. Should be fairly easy since I have fallen in love with my new electric upright. It's an Ergo in midnight blue, talk about a monster.

Sure wish I had a good vocalist to work with.

Here's the first run at vocals (added to the Soundcloud track):

http://soundcloud.com/john-richards/...s-a-dirty-word

Freedom is an ugly word around here
They're making it more absurd every year, yeah,
Freedom is an ugly word around here
They're making it more absurd every year

Freedom to lie, freedom to steal
Freedom to hide what is really real.
Freedom to spy, freedom to jail
And free bailouts whenever they fail, yeah,
Freedom is an ugly word around here
They're making it more absurd every year.
Freedom is an ugly word around here
They're making it more absurd every year.

Freedom to lay me off, freedom to raise my rent
Freedom to buy the whole damn government, yeah,
Freedom is an ugly word around here
Freedom is an ugly word around here

Freedom is an ugly word around here
They're making it more absurd every year
Gotta take it back, take it back, take it back, take it back

Freedom is an ugly word around here
They're making it more absurd every year
Gotta take it back, take it back, take it back, take it back
When they say freedom, they mean power.
It's getting closer to the midnight hour

Thanks for that, Brent, but I want to sound like Jack Bruce or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Got any tips?

Don't know them, but I would say, sing with the top of your throat instead of the bottom for rasp. Don't sing loudly.. instead max out the gain on the ssl and set the threshold on the compressor to the minimum. Another thing to try is lowering the tempo by about 10 bpm when you record so that you have more time to adjust pitch and get timing on point.. you can do it lower but when you speed it back up you may get artifacts. Do as many takes as you can, that way when you're comping you more than likely have enough clips to get what you want without having to Neptune too much.

Thanks Jase. I've always felt that hard blues has the feel of frustration and anger combined with optimism and uprising that I want to convey. I'm hoping to incorporate electric upright bass into that genre to add to the depth, like a giant growling beast wanting to tear down the citadels of the smug and the powerful. This is my first attempt in that direction.
