Flower Audio - EXCELLENT customer service! (and tips on using the Loudness Meter)
I'm no expert in 'loudness', so I contacted the people at Flower Audio to ask for some tips on using their latest RE product, the Loudness Meter:
Here's their reply, in case anybody else finds this information useful. All I can say is what a great company! They certainly get my recommendation.

You've probably seen it but just in case you haven't already:
The loudness level is directly related with the peak level in the
sense that if you increase the peak level by 3db, the loudness level
will also increase by 3. But you can have the same 0db peak level with
very different loudness levels. The reason for this is that the
loudness level (as the human ears feel it) is more related to the
average peak level rather than the highest peak in the audio. But
there's more, it's actually much better to calculate the root mean
square, rather than the average. But that's also not all because
higher frequencies contribute more to the human ear's feeling of
loudness and very low frequencies contribute less. The loudness meter
calculates the loudless level by first emphasizing frequencies above
1khz, rolling off frequencies below 50hz and then calculating the root
mean square in the time window provided. This follows a standard
called the ITU 1770.
The big loudness display is a combination of the left and right
loudness and not just their maximum.
Now, in practice, you want your max peak to never exceed zero but be
close to zero. -0.2db or something around there is a good place I
think. Then you want to use your limiter etc to get the total loudness
level to the level you want, you can make this as high as possible if
you want, some commercial tracks have around -6, I personally found
out by importing clips of songs into reason that, as a listener, I
prefer albums that are consistently around -9 (this is dance music so
in other genres it might change). So I recommend that you convert the
files for the songs you appreciate most in terms of consistent
listening pleasure into wav and import them into Reason and try the
loudness meter on them as in the video and figure out the level that
works for you best.

Thank you for buying the loudness meter. The big display shows the
"total loudness", which is a combination of the two smaller loudness
displays (and not just the maximum of the two), so if the material is
fairly balanced between left and right, then looking at the big
display should be enough. If the reference track and the main track
have different peak levels, use dyn.rng. mode for the big display by
pushing the mode button next to it so that the big display's value is
calculated as if the audio was normalized.
You probably got this already, but when you switch the inputs, the
whole device just starts listening to the selected input and all the
meters show values calculated from the selected input.
