All the sounds are played in Reason using a Midi keyboard except the guitar.
Guitar was plugged into a POD.

Scoob,
I checked out your site and listened to Crystalis.
Great tune! Chord changes, rhythmic texture, dynamic range, and cool composition!

Excellent production, and cool guitaring, and all the tracks feature some very nice chord changeups and good solid basslines and drum programming throughout.

It's all very modern guitar blues with some of the downsides that presents (for me... I'm old school ). Summer Treat is perhaps the standout, it's got more of a hook. Coasting By I also enjoyed. 4 Days is a lovely album-closer though, nice texture there with the horns. Perhaps it's because they are missing words (I was kind of making some up as the excellent Better Day was playing), but generally it felt a bit too samey tonally, all the solos are the same guitar sound, so the tracks don't seem to really seem go anywhere, and build to a conclusion (e.g. Rise Above, ironically, goes nowhere and stays pretty flat throughout).

So yes, you're definitely in the right ball-park, but pull back on the guitar solos - they are ment to break up the song, not be the song. Get some words!

I hope that's not too negative - cos I'm not easily impressed and I really liked the way you approach the chord sequence changes.

I appreciate the feedback. I've never been a vocalist and lead skills on keyboard have never been there. Guess I have a few new mountains to climb or get some other people involved.
I think you are right on the guitar tonality, I tend to gravitate to whats easy not challenging or new.
Good list of stuff to work on this winter !

glassguitar,

You've just been critiqued by the best. Go to jiggery-pokery.com and see what he does for his day job. (AMAZING Refills, and who knows what else.) I wish I could tell you how to look up some of his music. He is a master at anything to which he puts his hand. Anyway, do some of the things which have been suggested in this discussion and your music--which is damned good to start with--will be a world beater.

Slight change of topic: As far as producing music with instruments you don't already play, and without calling in some session cats, go to www.pgmusic.com and check out Band-In-A-Box (BIAB). I have been using it for years to generate MIDI tracks which I then port into Reason and finish up. Now, with Real Tracks, which are actual digitally recorded clips, and BIAB's accompanying DAW, RealBand (not a substitute for Reason, but it has some unique features), you can have world class drums, bass, sax, organ, and many other real instrument parts added to your music, which you can then bring into Reason for polishing and mastering. I'll be curious to know your thoughts after you give it a look. (No, I don't work for these people and I don't get anything for Saying Nice Things about BIAB; I'm just a dedicated user.)

My kind o' tuneage, man. Listened to "Better Day." Love your tone (I'm a Strat man, too). Only suggestion would be to have the guitar just a bit more forward in the mix; it's kind of buried at low volume. Mind you, that's a compliment--it means I want to hear more of your guitar!

I'll listen to more later, but I like what I hear.

Richard
