Pay-as-you-go option

Hi,

I would like to suggest a pay-as-you-go payment option for Reason 7 which includes the most popular Re:s. Additional Re:s can be rented on a monthly or yearly basis.

I would suggest a one-time fee of 99 EUR (encompassing basic Reason functionality) plus a monthly subscription fee of 19 EUR to cover the extras.

This would provide you with a recurring revenue stream and it would be a fairer and more contemporary way of buying into the Reason platform.

Not a bad idea... Adobe and Autodesk are doing similar things

I prefer to pay once. I do not like the system as at Adobe.

I don't really see any advantage for the end user. If we consider your suggested figures, without any rented REs, a first year using Reason would cost almost 340, plus nearly 240 for every subsequent year. Way more than today, when it is 400 for a licence plus 129 each upgrade, every 2 or 3 years. If Propellerhead went that route, Reason would become the worst money trap in the history of DAWs faster than you can say non-transferability.

5 years today: nearly 660 for full licence and 2 upgrades

5 years using your scheme: nearly 1320 for one off fee and 60 months subscription

PS: I'd be grateful if people stopped giving Propellerhead more ideas on how to milk us.

This is the way a lot of software is going. Good monetization strategy, you'll be seeing it crop up everywhere.

I wouldn't want it instead, I also prefer to pay just the once (then upgrade...)

But.. There is a market for that model - and I don;t think it's about PH milking us or not. For freelance engineers/producers, renting the software could end up being cheaper. If you don't need to use it every week, but you have a 3 month job on, then you could hire/rent/licence it for the duration..

Wouldn't want it instead of current model

But to be honest, neither Adobe nor Autodesk have earned much approval with that.
