Need Laptop Advice... QUICK!

Hey, folks:

Getting ready to make a big purchase... today! Need a bit of advice:

I have my eye on a Toshiba laptop - following specs:

Intel Celeron 2.4GHz
256MB DDR SDRAM
40.0GB Hard Drive

Would prefer more juice, but the price is right. My needs are fairly humble -- Reason, recording audio (not sure what program just yet, leaning towards Cubase), and I do graphics work with Photoshop and Flash MX... that's about it.

Does it sound like this machine has enough power? In particular, I was wondering about the processor.

Also, I know that a scant 256MB of RAM ain't much to brag about and will most likely upgrade ASAP.

That's it -- I just need some advice -- planning on making a purchase within the next few hours! (YIKES!)

Thanks, friends. Happy New Year to all!

Re: Need Laptop Advice... QUICK!

if youre gona use reason and cubase you might want to get a P4
Celeron's are not as good for demanding programs like cubase

256 isn't ideal but isn't so, so bad, but stay away from anything with a celeron processor, far away- really.
take it easy,

I agree, 256mb is probably somewhat workable, but the celeron has only 128k of on chip cache (unless they upped it recently?) as opposed to a p4's 512k. Photoshop for sure will hog on a celeron, and I bet Reason wouldn't be too happy either. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE HIGH GHZ RATING ON THE CELERONS(!)

Re: Need Laptop Advice... QUICK!

Nice to see a good thread. Hopefully those of you with laptop experience will post.

I have a Mac setup but thinking about a PC laptop for live instrument purposes.

As it stands right now, Dell, IBM, Sony, and Toshiba seem to be offering the latest. Is there any advantage in buying one of these brands? I've seen a lot of custom config "house brand" laptops available on the market on pricewatch.com for a little less.

I think I could get away with a 1ghz P3, 512 MB, 15 inch screen to use with Ableton Live and Reason. Thus, the Dell Latitude C800 1ghz PIII looks like a comparable model for me to start shopping. I don't want to spend more than $1000 so a TiBook is out for me.

Applecare or no TiBook ... !

I can tell and whenever you opt for no extended waranty you'll find out the hard way because repairs on those G4's are way too expensive ... !

my 2 cents,

Re: TiBook or nothing!

Do you have an experience that would help support your statement?

A TiBook would obviously be my first choice but I already have a Mac system. Portablility and cross platform compatibility are important for me to validate a purchase.
