NOTHING EXPLAINS THE WORLD SITUATION BETTER THAN THIS!

Subject: Reminder For Today

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the
existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans
-------------------------------------------

52 would be female
48 would be male

------------------------------------------------------------

70 would be non-white
30 would be white

------------------------------------------------------------

70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian

-------------------------------------------------------------

98 would be heterosexual

--------------------------------------------------------------

6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United
States.

------------------------------------------------------------------

80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
1 would own a computer

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance,
understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent.

The following is also something to ponder... If you woke up this morning with more health than
illness.. you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of
torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death.. you
are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator,
clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep, you are richer than 70% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are
among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If your parents are still alive and still married ... you are very rare, even in the United
States and Canada.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of
you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot
read at all.

Someone once said: What goes around comes around.

Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's
watching. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's Heaven on Earth.

It's National Friendship Week.

Re: NOTHING EXPLAINS THE WORLD SITUATION BETTER THAN THIS!- OT

Interesting post.

However, surely this just points out how human nature is really screwed up more than anything? It's not human nature to give something and expect nothing back in return, hence why most people are expected to be rewarded for work. In an ideal world, people would be really bright and have a high standard of living while working for the love of it, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

The problem is popularity. Leaders make choices based on popularity, but if most of the population doesn't know all of the facts, then the most popular choice isn't going to be the best one. I think it's time people realised that. However, if you give leaders complete control then they're going to abuse their position. I guess there's no real solution after all.

Anyway, I don't know enough about politics to say anything particularly intelligent so I'll leave it there. Good post, though.

Re: NOTHING EXPLAINS THE WORLD SITUATION BETTER THAN THIS!- OT

First of all, the original post is really good. Another way to look at it is that in order for us, the extremely rich people of the western world to be able to consume what we do, wich is somthing like 90% of the worlds resources, the rest of the world needs to be kept at bay. We are simply depending on the possibility to buy cheap raw materials and labour from the rest of the world to uphold our economies. We give a small sum of our huge wealth as economic support and pat our own backs, while in reality all this support manages to do is to uphold status quo.

now adfileding, about politicians and popularity =) I think alot of us who live in democracies don't really take the time to inform ourselves. As a result exactly what you describe happens, and the one with the best funded campaign and the most well written speeches wins the elections.

I for one think that democracy should be regarded as much an obligation as a human right. An obligation to be informed before we cast our votes. And an obligation to parttke in the political process. What good is democracy if less than half the people actually take part in it, and those who do are missinformed and ignorant?

Not to bash the US, but let me make a small example: When Bush was elected the US had some 270 million citizen. A large ammount of people where and are still living in the US on a permanent basis without citizenship, meaning that they to are higly effected by the election. Out of theese almost 300 million people, about 200 million had the right to vote. Out of theese only 100 million actually did vote. And out of theese a little less than 50 million voted for Bush. So basicly this means that only about one sixth of the people that are actually in a very direct way affected by the election voted for Bush. The question is if this is a good example of a sound democracy?
