What's the deal with "swing"?

Along the same lines as the recent Djen post about "beats", can someone please POST some EXAMPLES of what "SWING" is all about? I can't be smokin' crack without being aware of it, but dang it, I've seen some posts recently where people are explaining the concept behind swing and the magic of the MPC and, well, I don't know... either I'm a moron or I woke up on the wrong side of the universe or I'm a sleepcracker or I am COMPLETELY ignorant to the truth behind this "swing" thing.

I don't wanna read an explanation, I wanna HEAR *YOUR* rns / rps of a real life A/B comparison. Wich 1 yall'z up fo da challinj? r u a produsah and 4 reelz, or r u a nobuddy?

ok, that was stupid... :|

the GAP made swing popular

We can blame the GAP for making swing music popular for an entire month. T'was a dark day in music when that happened.

Re: the GAP made swing popular

Ya' see... I'm _clueless_. What's the GAP? I mean, I know of The Gap Band from the 80's. And the store called "The Gap".... come to think of it I do remember a Gap commercial during the infancy days of the camera effect best known as the classic Matrix effect of freeze frame or slomo pan/dolly/arc around your subject. The Gap had some kind of khaki pants and on a big white studio stage they had young kids doing boogie-woogie swing. But that's a WHOLE other swing... "Baby baby, looks like it's gonna hail..." Jump Jive. Right? I know that's definitely swing, but I think people on this forum have mistakingly classified "swing" as a mysterious THING you do to your music in percentages and secret hush hush confidential MPC only trickery with smoke and mirrors that is unatainable by the masses. It's just freakin' triplets / dotted notes / 3 in the time of 4, etc... goes by various names but it's cutting up the 4/4 with 12 notes instead of 16... in it's most arcane explanation, there I put it. Emphasis on each 3 and the following 1, make sense?

Still, I wanna see someone post an rps / rns... c'mon people, where's the love?

Yeah, I was only kidding about the GAP thing. I realize that you're asking about "swing" as in quantization.

Re: swing = shuffle

See... I know that, and you know that, but I think the yungin's in these parts are under a hypnotic trance (not the genre) which leads them to believe it's something completely different. Everyone wants this magical MPC conversion utility, when Reason has the tools all along. It's as if it's something you do to your composition AFTER you've created it, where for me, it's something you do as you're making your song, know what I mean jellybean?

And you know what, I *still* haven't heard anyone post an example. Still I say, where's the love?

swing rhythm description, for todays youth..

who knows what the 'street' translation of swing might be these days.. I cringe at the thought.. :-/

here's a rundown of a traditional swing rhythm:

-----
"Swing rhythm is based on two emphasized subdivisions of the beat which adds a horizontal feel to the music. The stress comes on the first beat and the moment the second third and the third quarter of the beat. Needless to say, this does not follow a regular, steady rhythm.

Imagine a beat subdivided into four parts: 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a

Now add an extra emphasis right before the third quarter of the beat (the "a"): 1 e &-ly-a 2 e &-ly-a . . ."
-----

and now for the youngin's:

-----
Swing rhythm iz based on two emphasized subdivisions o' da beat which adds uh horizontal feel ta da rap. The stress comes on da first beat an' da moment da second third an' da third quarter o' da beat. Needless ta say, dis here do not follow uh regular, steady rhythm.

Imagine uh beat subdivided into four parts: 1 e & uh 2 e & uh 3 e & uh 4 e & uh

Now add an extra emphasis right 'bfoe da third quarter o' da beat (the "a"): 1 e &-ly-a 2 e &-ly-a . . . peep this shit

Re: What's the deal with "swing"?

Clearly I'm a fossil. To me, swing has already meant altering a rhythm based on twos or fours so it comes closer to a triplet feel.

Swing is what Glenn Miller's got, baby. Or the Squirrel Nut Zippers, or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Snat. Reet. Zoot.

So what have you crazy kids done to my word now? If I catch you running on my lawn again, I'll... uh... what was I saying? Is Matlock on yet?

Re: What's the deal with "swing"?

Yup, that's swing for sure. Cuttin' up the beat into 3's. But like I was telling Progtronic on this same thread, I think there's a whole heap a misinformation out there - some grand misconception. For me, it's not something you apply to your track, though you can, to give it that feel. For me, to do it right, I have to compose as that as I go along. And this percentage thing... hmm... I don't know. If it ain't 100%, i would imagine it would be all off, wouldn't it? So why offer the percentage factor - to create a built in suck factor? Just kidding.
