slanger: I have them - upgraded from a theater/stereo system so relative to what I had they're great.

I like how they're small-ish, there's no way I could fit the 8's, and the 6's look a lot bigger too.

I only ended up with them because the price was right (I bought them used) and my previous 'monitors' were crap.

Genelec 8030s. Was always a toss up between them and the Mackie HR824s, but I see a lot of 8030s when I'm working so I thought that they'd be the best. I think they're wonderful ;-)

I have KRK Rokit 5s. And for headphones, Sennheiser HD 280 pros. Both great, reliable monitoring.

My buddy from Church let me borrow his Yamaha HS80Ms because he wasn't using them. I figured I'd run some sine sweeps measurements in Room Eq Wizard (with a calibrated rta mic) to see if there would be a difference between my speakers (M-audio Bx5s) and his. The only place I saw a real change is above 1hz. You can see (I attached the results) that room modes play a big part in any room. I would tell anyone who was interested in buying studio monitors (or just upgrading) to first look into the controlling the acoustics first. Keep in mind that I have alot of acoustic treatment up in my studio (I need to buy more bass traps as you can see in the results). My studio is in a small room so that's why I think I'm having a bass issue.

I also had both speakers setup to a M-Audio bx10 sub. I messed with the knobs on the Yamahas to see if I could get a flatter response but it didn't really matter due to room modes.

The M-audio Bx5s cost me 200$ for the pair and The Yamahas cost 349.99$ each on sweetwater.com . I'll probably just go back to using the Bx5s because I was just getting to "know" their sound.

That is generally true. I've just begun measuring my room with REW, and even with fairly good speakers and some treatment already there, my mix position has peaks that are 40dB(!) above the deepest pits (my time domain seems to look fairly good though, I think). Even if I could blame half of it on various error sources, it's fairly obvious that flatter speakers wouldn't really help here, while better room treatment and some eq (where possible) probably would.

In the name of fairness, though, I currently did upgrade my monitors and it did help quite a lot, but rather beacuse they new ones are better *suited* for my needs than "better" in a salesperson sense. Basically they're smaller and has less self-noise. That allows me to have them properly set up a lot closer to me than the old ones, which in turn improves the ratio between direct sound from the speakers and reflections from the room.
