Speakers And Headphones

Why is it that when I listen to something I produced on headphones, all the levels sound perfect, but I can never get it to be loud enough on speakers without it being murderously loud on the headphones?

Sums it up.
If you insist on using headphones consider buying a VRM Box from Focusrite.

If you can't mix in a million-dollar studio, or at least on good speakers, you have to listen to your work on many different systems to get an average. You CANNOT expect to get decent results with only one substandard monitoring system. If you get a mix that sounds good on your PC, home stereo, car system, MP3 player, etc., etc., then you have a pretty good mix. Do this for a while and you will learn how to mix on whatever you have available. It takes time at first but it's worth it.

I do recommend the VRM mentioned above, but your 'phones have to be way above average for this to work. You don't say what you are using. At a minimum you want something like Sennheiser HD 280-13's. I used Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's until I wore them out. Whatever you get, it needs to have a wide frequency range and good power handling capacity. Expect to pay a minimum of $100 USD; $200 to $300 is more like it. Sounds like a lot, but with care they will last for years and give great results.

Same boat. An important point I read, is that with speakers your left ear can hear what the right speaker is playing, but with headphones it can't. Also you can't physically feel the bass in the headphones. I can't use speakers due to my living situation. So must invest in headphones that compensate for these short comings.

Couldnt agree with Rys more. I use the VRM Box with a pair of Sennheiser 280Pro 64s and I have a pair of run of the mill Alesis M1active 620 monitors and it works quite well. Need a sub ideally but thats unrealistic for non-studio use cuz of the vibrations/noise levels. Before that I only had the headphones and monitors and an upgraded truck audio system to bounce tracks off of - and it was much more difficult BEFORE adding the VRM box. Like I tell my friends, there's no way to really describe what you hear from the thirty odd references that come with the VRM box, that is until you actually buy it and try it (or sample at a friends house). But it is the best 150$ or whatever spent in terms of this particular realm of AP imho.
