Cool, I'm glad you can use Reason to make music! It's a great platform and it gives you a lot of options.

A small correction to your post though - in Reason the devices are not VSTs (VST is a specific format which is used by plugins for many other DAWs, but not Reason).

The Matrix sequencer does seem like a good device for you to work with, but here are a few more things that might work for you if you're not already using them:

Edit Mode - If you turn on Edit Mode in the sequencer, you can draw in new notes or change ones that are there. If you don't already use this, it will probably be useful to you in the future.

Redrum - You can program in drum sequences even easier than using the Matrix.

RPG-8 - With just a few notes in the sequencer you can get some pretty complex patterns going.

Dr Octo-Rex is a loop player. Since you started with loops you might be comfortable with it, and you can get songs started quickly by using some loops as a base. Especially if you want to use instruments that you can't simulate very well in Reason otherwise (like guitars). Plus you can do a lot more to change the loops than you probably can in most loop based music programs.

You might already know all of that stuff, but in case you didn't, I thought those were some devices that would be worth checking out. Good luck with your music! It sounds like you've already been able to do quite a bit with Reason.
