So how many compressors do you guys use?

I've been producing music for about five years now, and am fascinated by compression & what it can do. So far I'm using the FET Compressor, Rough Rider, RE-2A and of course the M Class compressor. Just caught myself eyeing off the two D Cam units in the RE shop, and really wonder where it's all going to end.

I'm not a huge geek about production, just tend to choose a compressor by trying it out and if it sounds good (or better than the others for that particular application), then I'll go with it. But I'm interested to know if other more tech-savvy producers favour a particular compressor for a particular kind of sound/style - and how many of the damn things you feel you really need?

I find, as the years roll on, i use less compression.
it is still all over my tracks but a lot more subtle.

not delved into the news RE compressors much. The DCAM env shaper really is the nuts for drums/percussion.

I tend not to use compression as much in reason, I don't think i've used any. I have a hardware compressor that I often record through into reason if I have to, otherwise I don't touch it much in reason, often I just automate volumes more or try find ways to bring out the dynamics rather than compress them. However I have used the compressor on the SSL desk which I feel is very good and effective.

compressors

It depends on the song and how well it was recorded. If there is a part that needs to be louder then add compression on that part. I use on an average of 2 but that is up for grabs. I find that less is more but experiment. If you hear "pumping" then back off.
