eh, I only ever cut out maybe 10-15 seconds of dialogue in any given situation, so I usually find it better, but I'm really thinking I'll probably start using audio hijack for this.

I don't. I take the whole movie, pitch it so that it plays in 5 seconds, then audiotranspose it down, then cut 1 second of it, then crossfade loop that.

I heard you can make good rap that way.

On Linux, conversion from mp4 to wav is trivial, accurate... and free:

Put your mp4 files in a folder and type:
for name in *; do mplayer -ao pcm $name -ao pcm:file=$name.wav; done

voila. (mplayer comes out of the box.)

There are also (free) utilities that will rip a whole DVD onto a .wav file.

MPEG Streamclip does it. Free. For both Windows and Mac OS X. Requires Quicktime being installed.
Open your video. Export your audio. Done.
