Playing an instrument however badly can help. I find a lot of happy mistakes when playing guitar. I knew from the day I picked up my 1st guitar I would never have the physical skills to play it like a couple of my friends did, but I did use it to experiment and never really bothered learning any songs I liked unless I came across them by accident. Those friends of mine were excellent players but weren't interested in making their own music, I still play guitar, I sometimes wonder if they do. I guess what I'm trying to say is that experimentation and a stupid "won't read the manual" attitude have lead me to where I am musically. I'm kind of in the opposite situation to you, where I have lots of ideas but wish I had been more disciplined to learn various techniques, so that I could implement them better than my slightly naive outputs. Maybe you should let your goals drop for a while and just make any kind of music that comes to you just to get the ball rolling?

After jamming(trying to compose) with a friend who was accomplished musician but an awful songwriter, I decided that Taste is also equally as important as being able to finish songs. He can complete a song with no issue but its just sounds wrong.

I see that's in answer to my post. I guess taste is a personal thing. What do you mean by 'wrong'? Wrong notes as in discords, or just unsatisfactory progressions/resolutions?

I probably came off judgmental my my last post....... as taste is relative..... i suppose. The thing is, I posted a half hour after the guitar player left and I had a headache from me trying to edit stuff while he jammed out and churned up ear rattling riffs. I had my head phones on and I could not compete with his solo jam session. I then gave him the tracks I made and let him take over the recording before I lost my composure. i did not like what he produced and honestly probably most people would call it an awkward mix.

Hence, I came to the conclusion that its better to take your time learning to write music than it is to be able to finish a song in 20 minutes if it is poor. I believe there might be a few exemptions to this epiphany.
