I think I messed it up...

Hi there,
here is my latest Remix. It's my second attempt on this Acapella. The first one was a 80s like thing, this time I made it junglish.

BUT: I'm stuck in the mix. I think I need to clean some frequencies. But, as I said - I'm stuck. Do you have any suggestions, hints, tips?
Help appreciated.
Thanks .j

Which version of reason are you using? I'll tailor my advice based on the tools you've got
I like the melody and the vocals a lot btw, but you're right about the drums needing work.

Well, the ltest. Is it 6.52 I guess.
Instruments are:
A nn19 Piano (factory bank) with The Echo and a mclass as a insert
A subtractor for that glitchy sound that pops up here and then
another Thor on the same channel giving a tiny bit of support
A subtractor Bass with some pulveriser for some grit
A Thor for the sub-bass
That well known Jungle Loop in a badly timed cut (I like it) with a hipass filter around 430 Hz
The drums are a redrum kit (didn't use redrum for a long time)
Pitch for Snare and Hihats are modulated by an asynchronous Pulsar
Running through a
-rough rider
- scream4 unit with slight tape distortion and hi-boost
- an EQ with lowcut and two cutting tight notches at 170 HZ and 1700 Hz
- a Stereo Imager to keep the low end mono

The two Vocal tracks:
Main melody running through polar (for the low tuned voice), compressor and Echo wich ist triggered and modulated by a pulsar and a ducking Echo
The second sample "blazing fire.." ist sent through an compressor, Polar (Preset Loop shadow), and the knob with slight saturation on the high end.

I guess it's the basic sound of the redrum, might be a good idea to use a Kong. I always get more pressure and bang using Kong kits. Sad, but true. I could trigger Kong with redrum, so I won't need to reprogram the midi...

Ha ha, you've not missed anything there

Definitely use Kong drums instead of redrum ones, they're generally about a million percent fatter. I normally add a pulverizer to the kick and the snare as well - if you make about 60 to 75% dry and make it about 75% dirty and about 50% squashed that normally gives them a lot more punch.

Some very gentle tape distortion on the kick and the snare will go a long way as well. It's generally a really good idea to use the filters in the mixer to remove any unwanted noise. If you play each part back in solo and adjust the high and low pass filters up to the point just before they alter the quality of the sound. Often your synths will be creating noise in frequencies that you're not hearing but will muddy up other sounds.

Also I'd recommend trying out the mastering presets contained in the mixer, the bass & drum preset or the 8 band parallel compression would do wonders for the overall sound.

Hope that helps.

If you want any more pointers once you've tried all that don't hesitate to let me know, I'm learning this stuff all the time myself.

Yeah, trying a different mastering suite.
That's what I forgot. I use the standard Mastring preset. Never tried a different one. Plus a 4:1 Ratio on the Master Comp threshold about 2 o'clock, slowest attack & release makeup about 11 oder 12:30.
Might get difficult with that redrum replacement, since there are about 3 Bassdrums tonally supporting the bassline.
Might sound quite different when I'm done...

thanks a lot

No worries

Yeah might be a bit tricky altering the drums. I reckon it'll be worth it though. Let me know how it goes.

Dude, you are on to something with this. I certainly like where you're going with it. I'm not hearing major things, just minor tweaks. I do hear a small amount of pumping coming from the master buss, but I think you've already figured that part out. But don't make any major changes, the grit is whats giving it its flavor.

hehehe...

But in fact, I like both solutions. Heard the mix today with other headphones.... The Subbass is too loud! Way too loud. Maybe way too deep. Blasts away the bassdrums. I'll try to separate the frequency ranges of Bass and Bassdrums an add another Bassdrum with more punch and leave the rest, because I like the slight distortion on those Bassdrums and the overall sound of the drums. I guess it needs just one punchy bassdrum. And some parts of that glitchy synth need to be removed.
Wait and see, might take me a while.
