Civil Protection - Stolen Fire

Hello!

As some of you may or may not know (I feel like I start an awful lot of threads on this forum with that phrase...!), I write a lot of music for both my own solo albums & releases, and for production use in advertising/TV/film trailers/whatever. I also perform vocals & play guitars and generally make lots of noise in an instrumental post-rock band called Civil Protection.

When we first formed, we came from all over the place - our intention was to primarily perform as a post-rock band, but we ended up performing a lot of alt-rock/electronic pieces (mostly written by me) while we "found our sound". After many gigs and much deliberation, we actually got our arses in gear and, thankfully, got into writing the kind of music that brought us all together in the first place. We played a couple of gigs with our new sound and the reception was fantastic. After our second gig as a full-on post-rock-esque act, we were picked up by a local independent label... so we figured we were doing something right

Earlier this year, we recorded our first album. The whole album was mixed using Reason, and I used Reason for the bulk of arrangement & work. I'm really thrilled with how it's all turned out, and I'm really excited to finally be able to share the album in it's entirety.

You can listen to the entire album on Soundcloud via this handy player:

You can also listen to & purchase the album in your format of choice (both physical & digital) on our Bandcamp page here.

This is definitely an exploration into previously uncharted territory for myself, and I had an absolute blast producing the album. Being a guy who's used to being able to work with synths & sequencers when needed (though not being averse to focussing on guitars, vocals & other organic instruments when required), it was a fantastic experience to work almost entirely with live instrumentation instead.

I'd love to know what you think of our music. We're commencing a small UK tour starting at the end of the week

Sounds good man... Had this playing for a while as I did some house chores. I hear a lot of subtle references to a lot of bands that I like - not sure if this was intentional or not but you got a pretty progressive, epic and atmospheric sound going on. Dare I say I even heard a little stoner rock influences creeping through.. ok, ok, maybe I'm just looking too hard

Stolen Fire is one of the best albums of 2013 for me. If you are familiar with Adam's solo work then you need to hear this, it's very, very good.

Thanks! Yeah, we all have different tastes and influences that really show through in the music, so it was really interesting to have everyone getting involved in the song-writing process. I'm sort of loathe to use the term "organic" to describe it, but it fits in this case. A lot of our ideas come from recordings of us jamming together in the studio and seeing what pops up, which we then re-visit and flesh out. It's a great way of working.

Also, I used to listen to a lot of Kyuss when I was a teen, so it wouldn't be surprising to see a little stoner rock influence there Glad you liked it!

Thanks mate! I've just packed my gear away for our little tour - we're playing eight dates with a couple of days off during the bulk of it, so we've got a practice space booked to play with some new ideas during our down-time. Can't wait!

Figured I'd give this one last bump for a long time as I'm going to be all over the place playing this thing until the 20th...

Also, we got a rather nice review courtesy of the fine folks at Musical Mathematics. We've had a few excellent reviews elsewhere as well, which is rather nice!

Thanks a lot to everyone who's checked out the album so far, see you on the other side!

Thanks for the kind words! Sorry for the slow reply, I've just got back from our UK tour so I'm a little exhausted. We've got a few more shows lined up for the next couple of weeks, but I'm planning on focussing on my own solo work for most of the rest of this year. I'm glad you liked it!

I always like your music. Couldn't understand the vocals cuz they are pretty much buried and I wish there was more singing but cool vibes. Honestly I felt like some of the tunes are a bit too long for me although still good of course. I really like the dark and mysterious, almost- end of days sound you're going for. You guys rock.
Congrats on the indie label! You're making your way, my friend. Do you do music full time, as in for a living? If so that is incredible and I hope someday I will get there too.
Stolen Fire is my favorite on this LP.

Thanks mate! Really glad you liked it

The vocal mixing: yep, that was an intentional decision - I didn't want the vocals to be the focal-point of the music and, as clichéd as it sounds, I wanted to treat them as an extra instrument. We used to be quite a vocal-oriented band, but for this style of music it just didn't seem to fit.

Also, yep - I work on music full-time I had to set aside quite a big chunk of time to get this completed, so I'm glad with how it turned out. My other music is very, very different, so having an outlet for this kind of work is fantastic. You can hear my other music on my Soundcloud page
