Death by a Thousand Cuts - The Results!

Initial thoughts: obviously the sample size was way too small to draw firm conclusions, disappointing yes, but perhaps expected. Feedback from this whole process has been overwhelmingly positive, and thanks to those who took the time to consider their selections.

Do these results scale up into real world? Forum users invariably are a very small percentage of the whole user base so it's hard to tell. Everyone has a different workflow and found wildly different priorities in their top 20 selections. A larger voter base would have evened the results out at least a little and probably given a slightly more obvious top 20 Results list.

However there seemed to be a consensus from the Submissions and the Vote threads that pretty much all of the original Cuts list were considered highly desirable by those taking part, and as such, I think we should encourage and ask TPTB to seriously, soul-searchingly consider going through the list top to bottom and say "OK, can we get the top 20 of this list in next release? The top 50 by the end of next year? The whole damn lot by xmas 2013?!".

Think how awesome that could be. Developing software of mass use is bloody hard, and sometimes what seems to work during development, great ideas actually don't quite pan out. The vote I feel is a good benchmark for the way Reason is being used in the real world, and is something that can't easily be revealed at the developers workstations. These are issues, adjustments, additions that only come to light when lots of people have used the product for years. It's very possible quite a few Cuts have been considered by Props previously, maybe even implemented to some degree then dropped for various reasons: now would be a good time to revisit that dropped code and say "Can we now make that work?"

I stated at the beginning of this process: "There are so many great things about the Reason workflow. But there are some oddities in Reason, we’re talking Death by a Thousand Cuts: the little annoyances that we put up with every day, issues perhaps we barely even notice, that in themselves can seem inconsequential but if you think about them at all, come to the conclusion: “why the hell is that like that... wouldn’t it be better if... why can’t I just ... etc”. Sometimes, fixing little things can make many more people very happy than the showboating “Big Five” features."

That last line is worth repeating, and perhaps should be printed out on the Props Dev Whiteboard .... Sometimes, fixing little things can make many more people very happy than the showboating “Big Five” features.

Reason is still a damn fine program. We love the New Big Shiny. Don't stop giving us the New Big Shiny! But it's time to start bandaging up and giving our Cuts a chance to heal!

regards
JP

Great work JP!

An alternative to "44. Thor: Add built-in routes for F1 and F2 to Filter 3 stereo-in" is to implement small PAN rotaries on the actual filters for filter 1 & 2.

Being pessimistic I doubt that something like that (the pan rotaries that is) would be implemented though. :|

Good job.

Interesting to see that a) the top votes went to (IMHO) down-to-earth features instead of the more exotic ones and b) that some things didn't even get votes from the people who suggested them...

Good! Next do the same procedure for renewals of reason 6.5 or 7!

The best parts of this thread:

1.Notes: Single tool for drawing and deleting notes
2.Edit Mode: Add better grid contrast which fits to all colors

Brilliant poll though

Top panel folding

I don't know if something like this have been suggested already but I was thinking about wanting the functionality of folding a device main panel but keeping it's programmer visible,, if that makes any sense. So for all the devices that have a programmer, i.e. Thor, Kong, NN-XT and the RV7000 I can choose to fold the main panel but still have the programmer visible.
