.reason file modified even if I didn't change it...

Here is a Reason annoyance that I wish Propellerheads would remove form the program.

In Windows right-click on a .reason file somewhere on you file system, select properties, select the details tab. Make note of the 'modified date'. I don't know what the equivalent is on a Mac but I'm sure its easy.

Now, open the .reason file in Reason. Don't play the song, don't change a thing. Now, close the file.

Go back to the file properties and look at the modified date. It changed.

This is really poor file system etiquette. Any file that you did not modify should be COMPLETELY UNCHANGED. Virtually all programs honor this simple rule. Try it with ANY PROGRAM you can think of!

If this seems trivial consider someone using Dropbox or another cloud based tool. Any time the file changes Dropbox must sent the changes to it's peers. Fortunately most tools like this only send the delta of the changes so its really small.

Now consider someone who manually copies changed files to a NAS, maybe even over a wireless network for backup purposes - you know BACKUPS? you do them, right? A manual copy is a complete copy of the file. Reason files can be enormous. Gig's even.

So as a result of simply opening a reason file I have a "new version" which needs to be copied. Yuck! Seriously bad file system etiquette, Props... Need to fix this.

Wow.

I hadn't noticed that before. That must be very recent - 6.02? And yes, it is the "modified" and "date last saved" tag that are being changed on file close even without you having manually saved the file, or changing anything in the file.

This is bad and needs to be fixed pronto.

No, this has been the case since the Reason 5 and Record. A year and a half at least.

This sucks. My love to Propellerheads has a little crack because of this issue. I just was too lazy to complain about it. THX for doing it!

I am using Reason on 2 PC's and i need that function when 'synchronizing' them or it might happen that i overwrite the more recent file.

I noticed this too last week, when trying to find the last version when we got our mix versions mixed up.
The newest version was modivied earlier than the older version, which was really confusing.

We had to listen to both whole songs to pick out the right one, and change the name.

My love has no crack, I almost never use this date thing, except last week then ......

I'll bet they do a few things when files are opened and closed:

log what license was used to open it
date and time stamp (open and close stamps)
internet verification or ignition key
data to uniquely identify the computer

if there's an internet connection, they might transmit that info to the server to cross reference times when license is used to open files - to detect someone sharing a license by one person using the key and another person using internet verification - by looking for overlapping open-close times on the same license.

i get why they'd do that from a protection perspective - but I really get how changing a file that wasn't changed (by the user), is not a good thing.

yeah. first, i might be wrong on any or all of what i said. second, probably not. third, if i could think of an alternative, i would suggest it to them.

but... anyone with a specific issue should probably submit it as a support issue. things like:

I keep versions of my songs by time stamp. I made version 1 and saved it. I made changes and saved as version 2. i opened and listened to version 1 and made no changes. but... when i go by 'last modified' - version 1 comes up, even though version 2 was last modified. please fix.

i opened and closed a song and the last modified date changed in my OS, but i made no changes. please fix.

i backup my stuff using software or cloud that uses time stamp. i opened a song to listen to it, made no changes, and it triggered a backup. please fix.

My fear is that I would told that "It's not a bug but a feature, have a nice day."
