"magic" frequencies??? how do i handle an equalizer properly?

hi everyone!

can somebody help me with the "magic" frequencies???
is there any tutorial here about how the m-class eq works???

what does lo shelf, param 1 & 2, hi shelf mean/do?
what does frequency, gain & q mean/do?

i read about some magic frequencies:
sub-bass 16 to 60HZ
bass 60 to 250Hz
low mids 250 to 2kHz
high mids 2kHz to 4kHz
presence 4kHz to 6kHz
brilliance 6kHz to 16 kHz

what frequency is used on what?
lead, pad, etc...

i have added this track "One Republic Feat. Timbaland - Apologize (Trance Remix)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQNOU...eature=related

i have added it because it seems to work with 5 to 8 tracks...
it sounds so tight in itself.

how do i handle an equalizer properly? can i cut too much???
or is there any chance to a reason 3 song file of a track whith proper equalizing???
