cross-DAW sidechain compression techniques?

i am a huge fan of reason for rhythm programming, namely because the NNXT is a bomb sampler and using .rx2 files with dr. rex is my favorite way to process loops. however there are some great synths out there which can't be employed within reason, so i am often firing up ableton live as an AU/VST host.

mixing the audio from these two environments is no problem, but using sidechain compression for bass ducking - namely to compress the AU/VST bass in response to the kick drum - has been kind of unwieldy.

does anyone have some tips about how to go about this?
