Question Drumbeat programming approach?

Hi propellerheads. What's your approach to making beats in reason? I find it hard to make variations and progression using only redrum and patterns, so i've started transfering the beats to the sequencer, but i don't find it so intuitive.

I would like to try and make some 2-step beats and not just regular bar-based house.

I used to have a MPD, that i didn't use that much, so now i have the NANOseries instead. Anyone out there playing their beats and dubbing them up? I bet there is, and i think that might be the way for me to go.

Any good advice? How do you build up you drumtrack?
