Backwards compatibility good or bad?

I've seen plenty of good ideas on this forum but often they are 'rejected' due to problems with backwards compatibility. Could this be strangling development or do props need to do what Apple did with Mac OSX and say in order to move forward we are no longing supporting x, y, z modules. After all, you could always bounce the audio down from 'old' devices.
