How Does Rewire Work?

First post - Hi All!

I've done a search, and can't find an answer.

According to ReWire documentation, it is an audio transfer protocol.

I had a reputable mix engineer say to me that any mixing that occurs in a slave will use the hosts mix engine. Is that true? For example, if I had Pro Tools 11 running as host, and Reason or Ableton as slave, will mixing in Reason or Ableton use Pro Tools' summing algorithms, or will the slaves just send the final mix to the associated Pro Tools track[s]?

Thanks ppl!
