should you turn the ssl master compressor on right at the start?

My goal, after I mix my songs is to send them off to be mastered. According to things I have read, people seem to always say that you shouldnt apply any effects to the master bus before sending tracks off to be mastered, yet I have also head people like in the masterclass with Gary Bromham say that you should turn on the SSL master compressor right off the bat.

I would be very curious to hear your opinions on this matter and what settings one should use in the case that they do use the master compressor...

Thanks!
