Question Timestretch a sample?

Is it possible to timestretch a sound sample, for example a cymbal to a tension build up, without i have to use NN-19. i saw a turtorial on youtube with that method, and it sounded awful! mostly because the start of the sample got repeated rapidly along the way, until it reached a point where it had to continue on the sample.

Here is an example of what i mean.
