How to professionalise vocals

How do I professionalise vocals? What do you to the vocals. I understand you need to compress, EQ, probably Stereo Imaging and Maximize right? What's the best order to do this in and what settings on the compresser etc do I need. I do house music and indie/guitar music, would you need a different sounding vocal for these? My mate said my vocals don't sound like they're in the mix if you know wht I mean.
If anyone can help, or anyone can link me to a site or you tube tutorial that would help, that would be great. Thanks!
