question: Integrated audio or sound card.?

If I purchase the Reason software, do I need to get a sound card or can I use the integrated audio on my motherboard? I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard and I am told that the integrated APU is equivalent to a fairly decent seperate sound card (Dolby Digital encoding and so forth).
I'll be using a Yamaha P120 digital piano with a USB MIDI interface.
Am I correct in assuming that 'Latency' is the amount of time between my playing a note on my keyboard controller and hearing a sound from my speakers? If so, it seems that having the APU right next to the CPU on the motherboard would be an advantage. What advantages are there to having a sound card?
Thank you for using your valuable time to read my post. Dewayne
