composing...good drums/basslines

as regards house/funky dance...'they' say, when composing you start with your drum track, and then bassline, as these are the two most important components. In fact if you manage to get a killer drum and bassline mapped out you're seventy percent of the way there.

now applying this to reason, any interesting/useful tips for maximising the quality of drums/basslines when composing and building your track?? Like for example, the best way to arrange modules and effects for drums and bass.... Obviously there isn't just one correct set up, but maybe some of you have found some sure fire ways of helping you to put together some cool sounding riffs/bars, that sound great and sit well in any or most mixes...????
