What makes good Dance Music??

I know this probably sounds like an amateur question, so I apologize in advance. I am attempting to mix some good dance music for the cheerleaders at my school, but the more I try, the harder it is to get started. I was wondering if anyone could outline for me what makes good dance music. I know there has to be a punchy bass and lots of drums, and such. The tempos usually seem to be around 130 - 140 bpm. Basically I just need ideas on theory and composition, as well as the instruments and effect most commonly used. Any advice or help or links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
